  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why did God punish all the Egyptian families because one man, Pharaoh, refused to let the Israelites go?

Sin has consequences, not only for individuals but also for communities and nations. The Egyptians collectively participated in the oppression of the Israelites and benefited from their forced labor.

The plagues were a collective judgment against the nation of Egypt for their sins. The death of the firstborn was the final collective punishment.

God sent a flood to kill everyone except Noah's family. Ultimately, God is sovereign to do whatever pleases him.

I agree with you. I think that modern thought is every person stands or falls as an individual, and counter examples may be overlooked.
  • Imagine someone riding in a car driven by someone drunk. The person "didn't do anything wrong or illegal", and yet they are killed alongside the driver when the drunkard crashes the car.
  • Another person may move his family to a pleasant coastal town in Japan, into a beautiful house beside the water. But when a Tsunami comes and destroys everything, one wonders why the city planning commission allowed the house to be built in a danger zone.
  • Modern society creates excess toxic waste that many fear is poisoning our world's environment. Too many greenhouse gasses, too much plastic that pollutes our oceans. A child is born that never participated in any of this, and yet suffers the consequences
I try to keep in mind that God is not simply a courtroom judge, meeting with individuals one-on-one. He is also running all the laws of the universe, all in parallel, and the natural consequences of a group's actions have effects on seemingly innocent bystanders.

Ultimately, God is sovereign to do whatever pleases him.

Yes, but this is not a very satisfying answer. A child that grew up with an abusive father may have the same idea in mind, but also hate their parent. I would add that God is sovereign to do whatever pleases Him, AND He always does everything just right, for the maximum good of the maximum individuals. He is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to bring about ultimate good. He is a loving and kind parent, who actively works for the good of His children.

Best wishes,

Kevin

You are totally right in the OT context. I used to think it was the same in the NT but I saw this article from a minister to those in government. Basically the premise is that in the NT God is more or less seeing people as either believers, or unbelievers. So God may judge the church but not the nations. It goes through all the types of judgment and is a good primer on the subject if anyone is interested. Is God Judging America Today?
