EU lawmakers divided on U.S. election but united on strengthening European security and competitiveness.
Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) agree that Europe needs a wake-up call following the election of Donald Trump in the United States, but while lawmakers on the left reacted hysterically, arguing that “fascism” is returning to the U.S., right-wing MEPs celebrated the return of Trump to the White House as signalling an end to the woke “madness” and pro-migration agenda of the Joe Biden-led administration.
The plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg on Wednesday, November 13th, gave way to a debate on the future of EU-U.S. relations following Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
The leaders of EU member states had already discussed at their meeting in Budapest last week what a Trump presidency would look like for Europe. They agreed that Trump would look out for American interests first, and likely pursue a more isolationist, non-interventionist foreign policy, as well as a protectionist economic policy, with the potential of imposing tariffs on European goods.
