  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pro-lifers must resist Trump on abortion and IVF

Pro-lifers should rejoice in the defeat of Kamala Harris, and of the Democratic Party, which remains the greatest threat to the unborn in American politics. But they cannot rest, because their job is only half done. The second greatest threat has yet to be dealt with, and that is Donald Trump.

Many pro-life Trump supporters will be shocked and angered at such a statement. But I urge them to resist this emotional reaction and dispassionately consider the cold, hard facts. Trump supports preserving access to the abortion pill, which is responsible for the majority of abortions in the United States. Since these pills can be sent by mail into states where abortion is restricted or banned, preserving such access largely undermines recent state-level pro-life measures. Trump also actively opposes those measures in any event, insisting that they are “too tough” and need to be “redone.” He has repeatedly said that, even at the state level, abortion must remain legal beyond six weeks. And he wants the federal government to pay for, or to force insurance companies to pay for, in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments – a practice that results in the destruction of more human embryos than even abortion does. The only threat to the unborn Trump has clearly and consistently opposed is late-term abortion, which accounts for a mere 1% of abortions. In short, the policies Trump favors would prevent very few abortions and encourage the discarding of millions of embryos. True, Trump is much better than Harris in supporting the rights of pro-lifers. But he is now only a little better in upholding the rights of the unborn.

Honestly, this was a lot of the reason I felt I could not vote for either candidate ,even though Kamala Harris and the Democrats are even worse than Trump. I know a Trump administration will be a lot better for pro-life, and I'm grateful for his judicial appointments and support for pro life and religious liberty during his
first term. But I was not happy to see he posted on his Truth Social that the government would pay for IVF- No it shouldn't!! Because then will the government have to fund IVF for same sex couples and single women and all kinds of different situations? And I object to mail abortion pills. The government in no way should fund IVF- I'm sorry.
This is one area where I hope he doesn't keep his promises. And " The Father of IVF?" Please. Again, I'm happy the election went the way it did, but I agree with this author. Thank you for posting this article.

At least under a Trump administration, pro-lifers will be able to continue to express their opinions ... and continue to fight for what they believe to be right. We would not have had those freedoms for much longer, under Harris. So now is the time for pro-lifers to remain active, while this window of opportunity is still open.

This is all true. She denied Catholic hospitals the right to refuse to perform abortions.
That’s disgusting. It shows she’s no friend to the faithful.

One of the positives about Trump: He appears to be very 'Catholic friendly'.
(That's a plus+, for American Catholics!)

Maybe he will convert?

I heard years ago, Bush II was going to convert after leaving the White House, but that never happened.

I voted for Trump because Harris was all about abortion, abortion, abortion, Trump is bad.

She was too extreme, imo.
Yeah when you have an abortion clinic outside the DNC advertising abortions that's pretty extreme. BTW almost all of ELon Musk's children were conceived via IVF.

Why not the normal way? Yikes!

While we pro-lifers don't agree with IVF, I have learned not to expect Christian behavior from persons who are not truly converted to Christ.

Formerly an atheist, in a July 2024 discussion with Jordan Peterson, Elon Musk explained his spirituality this way:

“While I’m not a particularly religious person, I do believe that the teachings of Jesus are good and wise… I would say I’m probably a cultural Christian." and... "Christian beliefs," Musk argued, “result in the greatest happiness for humanity, considering not just the present, but all future humans… I’m actually a big believer in the principles of Christianity. I think they’re very good.”
