  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and the global Anglican Communion, has announced that he will be resigning amid outrage over an abuse cover-up scandal.

In a statement posted to the Church of England’s website on Tuesday, Welby announced his decision to step down, having received “the gracious permission of” King Charles III.

“The Makin Review has exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth,” stated Welby. “When I was informed in 2013 and told that police had been notified, I believed wrongly that an appropriate resolution would follow.”

He has to ask the monarchy for permission? Then won't the King approve of a new Archbishop if I understand correctly?

I can't say I'm too surprised there is sex abuse. It seems to be everywhere nowadays :(

I think that's part of the Church of England being an established church. The procedure would be different in countries like the US.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too. I don’t think The Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) has bishops, but the King is an overseer, although he is legally an Anglican, if I understand correctly.

In the UK the King is the head of the Church of England so yes he did have to tender his resignation to the King. The election of a new arch bishop will take some time. Perhaps many months as candidates are tested both for ability and vocation for said role. The UK press has been insistent, as have many senior clergy that the archbishop resigns to show that the church is working towards full adoption of UK safe-guarding guides and policies that apply to both children (under 18’s) and adults with vulnerabilities. These laws apply to every single person and organisation in the UK. Having been the named safeguarding person who had to undertake leadership safeguard training on a frequent basis, it is not much fun. You are damned if you do and damned doubly if you miss anything.

Our laws are different, our canon laws are part of the countries jurisprudence and I for one will be drinking a fair amount of tea Whilstpraying.

So be it. There should be no place in the church for covering up abuses. It is a sad way to close a career otherwise marked by certain gifts. Hopefully future leaders and those of other denominations as well will take note of a lesson learned.

I live in the UK and this is shocking news for many Anglicans I am sure. I am non demontional and my local church is Anglican. I never even heard of even such cases. I don't really listen to the news. His lost will be felt in the Anglican church and UK by many. Not commenting on the case I just felt a sense that so many of us are letting God down. We all make mistakes. There is so much going on in the world at the moment, that I find this just too much to take on right now.
