• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Social media companies shouldn't be involved in someone's content at all, unless they're directly insulting another member of that site or posting perverse things.
Sites have rules. (including this one). If I ran a social media site, I wouldn't want my users thinking that uncontrolled falsehoods were freely propagating on my site.

That's a power issue. Before all the censorship, here on these sites we used to post verifying evidence in almost all our posts, citing sources to back our claims... Then we could critique the sources in a debate format, to see what was more or less likely accurate.

Times have changed. Nobody backs up their posts anymore, and I'm not sure if it's because we've become lazy, or if it's because we've morphed into more of a facebook/Twitter posting style as time went on.

Regardless, we were here first, and our old ways are better than the new, modern way of silencing others rather than debating them.

I've been reading this site since before you joined (you probably have been too). I don't recall "citation" as being common on this site. There were a few "debate" forums that have been shut down (not in this section, but in C/E, and a few other sections). Those fora featured long posts that people spent hours writing. (I've written a few of those posts too, but that is not the majority of them). Most posts are short and most contain at most one "reference" link.

What is facebook? :) (never been to that site, so I don't have any idea how things go down there.)

I don't know "Landon", it sure looks like you were trying to get me to call for making propaganda illegal or worse:
Should there be some way to silence these propagandists? So that these "ideas" are stifled before spreading?

If we uncover that common source, we could unite together and bully that person.

Perhaps it should be a crime to spread falsehoods? Or is there a better way to punish this behavior.

Like I said, the sites should take some responsibility for the content posted on them and deal with posters who propagate known propaganda and falsehood.

Or just point out that they're spreading falsehoods. One might imagine that people with integrity would stop doing that once they learned of their error.

I doubt you guys could successfully silence me on what I've written here, even being a MAGA myself... But I'm sure someone could try. Go for it!

...But I've been posting on anonymous forums just like this one since 2008, starting with CAF (Catholic Answers Forums) and we always used citations then to support either scripture, the CCC, or news. We didn’t just throw opinions around without also providing supportive sources... So yeah, forums have become more like facebook over time. Unfortunately.

And the anonymous "black insurrectionist" could have easily been beaten in debate, but instead we see people uncovering his actual identity, and attacking him personally in an attempt to bully and silence him.

...So we shouldn't bully them by calling them names like "deadbeat", "idiot" or "wackjob"..? Instead we should simply point out their errors?

No one is trying to silence you. Nor did anyone say they wanted to. We were talking about propaganda.

No "scripture" or quote from the catechism is going to be relevant here. As for the "news"...

That is part of the problem here. The propaganda was making its way into low-grade "news" sites and links were posted to such. Posting "news" here *is* the propaganda.
And the anonymous "black insurrectionist" could have easily been beaten in debate, but instead we see people uncovering his actual identity, and attacking him personally in an attempt to bully and silence him.
The "black" insurrectionist didn't offer debate. He posted a fake document and claimed it was true. He's also been spreading conspiracies on Twitter for a while. (He apparently made up some horrible stuff about Tim Walz that didn't get the same traction.) He got what he deserved.

The amount of scam and manipulation that right wing media consumers fall for still amazes me.

For some reason I stubbornly maintain a faith in the independence of the human mind...... against everything my eyes and ears tell me.
