In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sister of slain Army soldier blasts report claiming Trump dishonored family

“I don’t appreciate how you are exploiting my sister’s death for politics- hurtful & disrespectful to the important changes she made for service members,” she replied to The Atlantic. “President Donald Trump did nothing but show respect to my family & Vanessa. In fact, I voted for President Trump today."
“My sisters death was never to be politicized,” she added. “Unbelievable.”
Also reacting was family attorney Natalie Khawam, who named The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg in a condemnatory post on X.
“After having dealt with hundreds of reporters in my legal career, this is unfortunately the first time I have to go on record and call out Jeffrey Goldberg@the Atlantic,” she wrote. “I would like to also point out that the timing of this 'story' is quite suspicious, as this supposed conversation that Trump had would have occurred over 4 years ago!”
Here is a surprise:

The publisher of The Atlantic, Laurene Powell Jobs, is an open supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris. The two have a longstanding history dating back to Vice President Harris's time as district attorney of San Francisco.

Sorry. In no way does her proclamation discredit the story's veracity.

She is just saying she didn't like it. And that's fair. I imagine it would be really difficult to accept that someone could be two faced; especially about someone she cared about.

Sister of slain Army private rebukes report on Trump, says she was misled

Her own words

From Mark Meadows:

I was in the discussions featured in the Atlantic’s latest hit piece against President Trump. Let me say this. Any suggestion that President Trump disparaged Ms. Guillen or refused to pay for her funeral expenses is absolutely false. He was nothing but kind, gracious, and wanted to make sure that the military and the U.S. government did right by Vanessa Guillen and her family.

Shortly after her remains were discovered, President Donald Trump himself invited the Guillén family to the White House. With Guillén’s mother seated beside him, Trump spent 25 minutes with the family as television cameras recorded the scene.

In the meeting, Trump maintained a dignified posture and expressed sympathy to Guillén’s mother. “I saw what happened to your daughter Vanessa, who was a spectacular person, and respected and loved by everybody, including in the military,” Trump said. Later in the conversation, he made a promise: “If I can help you out with the funeral, I’ll help—I’ll help you with that,” he said. “I’ll help you out. Financially, I’ll help you.”

Khawam, the family attorney, told me she sent the bill to the White House, but no money was ever received by the family from Trump.

She voted for Trump in this election already. She has come out to support him, which is kind of her in the face of the tragedy she is facing with the media exploiting their tragedy like this and misrepresenting them.

After having dealt with hundreds of reporters in my legal career, this is unfortunately the first time I have to go on record and call out Jeffrey Goldberg@the Atlantic: not only did he misrepresent our conversation but he outright LIED in HIS sensational story. More importantly, he used and exploited my clients, and Vanessa Guillen’s murder… for cheap political gain. I would like to also point out that the timing of this “story” is quite suspicious, as this supposed conversation that Trump had would have occurred over 4 years ago! Why a story about it now?! As everyone knows, not only did Trump support our military, he also invited my clients to the Oval Office and supported the I Am Vanessa Guillen bill too. I’m grateful we were successful in getting bipartisan support of the I Am Vanessa Guillen Act, and because of everyone’s hard work and efforts our service members now have more protections and rights while serving our country.

Two problems:
1. That's a crowd-sourced rating meter (meaning that a story that goes viral on right-wing media that happens to say something counter to the right-wing narrative can get dogpiled, or vice versa). You can tell this because it says "Click on Meter to Rate This Article"

2. None of the articles posted in this thread are from Newsweek, and they only post those meters on their own articles.

None of this contradicts the reporting, which covers Trump's remarks to his staff when presented with the bill that he had offered to pay and the fact that he ultimately did not pay it.

I guess if your standard of behaviour is that you just have to be kinda nice to someone's face then trump's your guy.

If you want someone who is true to their word. Someone with integrity, you may need to give this guy a pass. His mouth says things that he doesn't cash.

You have zero proof they were lies.

All you have is hearsay once again. An accusation by an unnamed source refuted by someone named and in the room.

I think you misunderstood the point which was not that Lawyer Khawam was lying but the she did not affirm in this statement that Trump's generous support of the family included actually paying funeral costs. In other words, non-payment was not in the list of alleged lies the article told.

Question: Doesn't the military cover funeral expenses of soldiers as a matter of course?
All you have is hearsay once again. An accusation by an unnamed source refuted by someone named and in the room.
the I Am Vanessa Guillen bill
While Trump may have supported this act, he did not do so from the Oval Office as it was introduced in 2021 by Sen. Hirono (D - HI) and co-sponsored by no Republicans.

This bill never made it out of committee, but portions of it did become law in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act.

Commanders will no longer be involved in military sexual harassment or sexual assault investigations under a new federal law named for a murdered Fort Hood soldier that goes into effect on Jan. 1 [2022].
Provisions of the “I Am Vanessa Guillén Act” were included in the $770 billion National Defense Authorization Act that was signed by President Biden on Monday.
Under the new law, the decision to prosecute sexual assault and sexual harassment will be made outside service members’ chain of command and they will be offered protections against retaliation. A similar state law, filed by state Sen. César Blanco, D-El Paso, was passed and signed into law last summer.

The article the OP says lied: Trump: ‘I Need the Kind of Generals That Hitler Had’

Pertinent passage:
Khawam, the family attorney, told me she sent the bill to the White House, but no money was ever received by the family from Trump. Some of the costs, Khawam said, were covered by the Army (which offered, she said, to allow Guillén to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery) and some were covered by donations. Ultimately, Guillén was buried in Houston.
Shortly after I emailed a series of questions to a Trump spokesperson, Alex Pfeiffer, I received an email from Khawam, who asked me to publish a statement from Mayra Guillén, Vanessa’s sister. Pfeiffer then emailed me the same statement. “I am beyond grateful for all the support President Donald Trump showed our family during a trying time,” the statement reads. “I witnessed firsthand how President Trump honors our nation’s heroes’ service. We are grateful for everything he has done and continues to do to support our troops.”

DaisyDay is correct on this point.

In the statement you quoted, family attorney Khawam alleged the Atlantic article contained "lies" and "misrepresentations".
In the statement you quoted, family attorney Khawam did not specify what those lies and misrepresentations are.

The source of the "story" should be all that's needed to call it into question.

Evidently an organic "October Surprise" wasn't happening quickly enough, so they trotted out a story from Jeffrey, "anonymous sources tell me", Goldberg.

Jeffrey Goldberg was the same guy behind the unverifiable "suckers and losers" thing that he published right before the 2020 election, something that supposedly happened when Trump was in France, and that not even Snopes would rate as "true" due to the fact that that story also relied exclusively on "anonymous sources", and nobody who was willing to put pen to paper (and put their name on it) could verify it.

Jeffrey Goldberg was also behind the story about the supposed occurrence where Trump supposedly cancelled a visit to a veteran's memorial site because "he thought the rain may make his hair look bad".

Per Vox & Buzzfeed (not "Trump-friendly sources" by any stretch of the imagination)
Not knowing exactly who heard what — with none of the sources on the record — muddies the picture.
Second, and more importantly, there’s evidence to suggest Trump’s decision not to travel to the cemetery had nothing to do with his hair.
Documents obtained by BuzzFeed News’s Jason Leopold via the Freedom of Information Act seem to show the US Navy canceled Trump’s helicopter ride to the cemetery due to the bad weather.

Safe to say fact checking organizations like PolitiFact and Snopes aren't bashful out calling out Trump.
Safe to say other publications like BuzzFeed, Vox, and AP aren't huge "Trump fans", they won't say the story is authentic -- if there was even a chance it was authentic, they'd be reporting on it very differently. (the only ones trying to give it any merit are hack outlets like DailyBeast and Salon -- which are just the leftwing equivalent of Newsmax and OAN)

As far as I know, CNN's not even touching the story (which means there's virtually no chance it has any merit, if it did, they'd be all over it)
