  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey, thank you for including 2023 data. So, that means, crime has actually stayed level from 2021 to 2023, and only went up by <1%. 2022 has higher crime rates compared to 2021 and 2023, so 2022 must have been an anomaly.

In summary, it looks like crime rates have been flat over the past decade. Neither increasing that much, or decreasing that much.

So all the talk, headlines and political speeches about crime being down are just spin.
Not surprising

I agree. If one wants to say crime is down, what reference point are these folks in the news using? 1993? Yes, crime is down from early to mid 1990s levels, but based on the last decade or so (circa 2010 to now), crime is flat. So yes, this stuff from media is 100% spin.

A 2.1% drop in violent crimes in 2022 has now been revised to show a 4.5% increase, crime and data expert John Lott found

The Federal Bureau of Investigation quietly updated its 2022 crime data to show an increase in violent crimes, despite previous data showing violent crimes had fallen that year, which was touted as a victory for the Biden-Harris administration.

"For some reason, the media, they did pick the crime data that they think goes and makes the Democrats look as good as possible. And then even when the crime data that they've relied on turns out by the very source of that data to be wrong, none of them fix it," Lott, the founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, told Fox News Digital in a Zoom interview this week.

The FBI released its annual crime in the nation data for 2022 last year, which found a 2.1% decrease in violent crimes compared to 2021, Lott explained. The data was lauded by Democrats and the media as part of a turning point for crime woes in the U.S., following the crime wave of 2020, when defund-the-police protests and riots swept the nation and the pandemic’s stay-at-home orders upended daily life.

Now, the data reflects a net increase of 80,029 violent crimes in 2022 over 2021. Lott found that under the umbrella of violent crime, there were an additional 1,699 murders, 7,780 rapes, 33,459 robberies and 37,091 aggravated assaults that year.

Here's current data: https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/crime-trend. From an explanation given here New Reason to Doubt That Recent FBI Crime Statistics Are Sufficiently Complete | National Review it appears that there was a change in the way the numbers were collected, so 2021 was more of an estimate than usual. The graphic in the first referencce makes it look like the current 2021 numbers are unusually low, making for an apparent rise in 2022. The overall trend is very slightly down, but probably not significant, particularly if the method of reporting changned during the period.

This is standard fare in American Presidential politics, the Party out of the White House tells us all “how bad things are because of the [other] Party!!!”
Sometimes the concerns comport better with reality than other times, and we’re in “other times”.

Agreed. When in reality, things are bad because of both parties, corporate greed, and the state of the fallen world.
