  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Super dumb question: An Eastern Rite Cardinal could NEVER be The Pope, correct? Only Latin-Rite Cardinals are eligible for Pope, correct?

I see Pope Francis named Bishop Mykola Bychok of Australia as a new Cardinal, and he is a prelate in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Edit: It apparently can happen, but a vast majority of Cardinals (and faithful) are Latin-rite, so it's HIGHLY unlikely.

The pope doesn’t have to be Latin Rite. A pope from the UGCC would be possible. Might be good for the rest of us too.

The Holy Father has done it again: 21 new prelates of his liking to be made cardinals on 8 December. By this stage of the Francis papacy the list comes as no surprise. Obvious contenders have been passed over once again, while people no one has heard of make their first appearance on the world stage.

At the same time, some of those obvious contenders have actually made the cut: among them the Archbishops of Toronto and Turin and high-ranking functionaries like the vicar-general of the Diocese of Rome. Meanwhile, retired nuncio Archbishop Angelo Arcebi has been made a Prince of the Church at the grand old age of 99. He will not be voting at the next conclave, whether he lives to see it or not.

Some of the lucky winners of the latest round of red-hat roulette may also find themselves on the wrong side of the Sistine Chapel doors when “extra omnes” is called. Should the Lord choose to call a conclave next September, for example, the famous English Dominican Timothy Radcliffe will also be excluded. A former Master-General of the Order of Preachers, he turns 80 in August. An erudite theologian with impeccable liberal credentials, he is currently leading the spiritual retreats on the Synod on Synodality in Rome.

Then would the UGCC automatically become Latin rite since he’s the Bishop of Rome?

No. The new bishop of Rome would still belong to his Rite and would function bi-ritually. Some bishops and priests do this all the time.

Thanks for clarifying.

I actually know of a Benedictine monk-priest who is bi-ritual and can celebrate the Melkite liturgy.

Super dumb question: An Eastern Rite Cardinal could NEVER be The Pope, correct? Only Latin-Rite Cardinals are eligible for Pope, correct?

One does not need to be a cardinal at all, let alone a Latin Rite cardinal, to be elected pope. One doesn't even need to be a bishop... in fact, one doesn't even need to have been ordained as a priest. The only requirement for eligibility is to be a male baptized Catholic.

Indeed, the current Code of Canon Law has rules should a non-bishop be elected:

Can. 332 §1. The Roman Pontiff obtains full and supreme power in the Church by his acceptance of legitimate election together with episcopal consecration. Therefore, a person elected to the supreme pontificate who is marked with episcopal character obtains this power from the moment of acceptance. If the person elected lacks episcopal character, however, he is to be ordained a bishop immediately.

So anyone can theoretically be elected pope, so long as they are a male baptized Catholic (and are, obviously, willing to accept the role).

In practice, being a voting cardinal can be considered a requirement to be pope, as the last person to be elected pope who wasn't at the papal conclave was Adrian VI in 1522. Adrian VI was technically a cardinal, though; the last person to be elected pope who wasn't a cardinal at all was Leo X in 1513 (who was not even a priest at the time, so he had to be ordained and consecrated bishop before becoming pope).

That said, just because it's been a really long time (about 400 years) since a non-cardinal was elected doesn't mean it can't happen again. In 1978, it had been more than 500 years since there had been any non-Italian pope, but then John Paul II was elected. So it could happen that someone outside of the college of cardinals is elected.
