  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

COMMENTARY: Ohio’s Catholic bishops and governor emphasize the need for honesty and integrity in political discourse, especially among Catholic leaders.

Is Sen. JD Vance telling the truth about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets?

If not, should a Catholic political candidate be corrected for spreading falsehoods? The Catholic bishops of Ohio have done just that, as has the Catholic Republican governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine.

Former president Donald Trump repeated the claim about Haitians killing and eating pets in his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Vance, who represents Ohio in the Senate, repeatedly has made the same claim about his state.

The controversy illustrates a different concern about Catholic candidates for political office. For many generations, the usual question has been whether the policies of a particular Catholic candidate cohere with Catholic social teaching. For example, 40 years ago, Catholic vice-presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro of New York City was corrected by then-Archbishop John O’Connor regarding abortion. The 1984 campaign included an extended debate over Catholics and abortion, with Gov. Mario Cuomo of New York, also Catholic, rejecting O’Connor’s teaching in a landmark address at the University of Notre Dame.

Local officials — Gov. DeWine, Springfield’s mayor, local police — said that the Trump/Vance claims were false.

The thing is, many of us in Ohio do not believe those ^ persons. With many of us, they have lost public trust.

And rarely is it mentioned, that Gov. DeWine's family runs a school in Haiti. They established it decades ago, in honor of their daughter who died. The DeWines have made many many trips to Haiti throughout the years. So his connection to Haiti, and his allowing 20,000+ Haitian immigrants to land in Springfield, is seen as a very questionable move by many of us here. Yes, DeWine is a Catholic. But that does not mean that every decision he makes is the right one, or the best one for Ohioans.

As an Ohioan paying taxes, and continuing to fund this situation in Springfield, I would like to know where DeWine got the approval to do this to Springfield. And since the 'cat/dog' discussion, DeWine keeps tossing more and more Ohio taxpayer money into Springfield to help the immigrant situation, trying to fix the 'mess'. But it appears he brought it on. The debate discussion just brought it all to light.

The facile "Of course there were no cats" line followed by claims of Vance being of course a racist is put into question by a picture of a barbecue with what looks very much like a cat. Of course anyone can fake anything now just as easily as one can deny the truth.

I hope they too are not spreading falsehoods as did that Kentucky bishop who said the Kentucky Catholic school kid was a racist a few years back.
Former president Donald Trump repeated the claim about Haitians killing and eating pets in his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Vance, who represents Ohio in the Senate, repeatedly has made the same claim about his state.
I'd say it is not a proven lie. Nor proven true. Maybe not provable or disprovable at this point.

Catholics SHOULD be known for truth and righteousness. Ha! Ferraro and Cuomo laid the groundwork for Pelosi and Biden. The archbishop was right 40 years ago. They were in denial of a serious matter of morality and they got away with it. A lie is a serious thing, but Vance can at best be accused of speaking about something with no evidence. These other guys were promoting evils from the pit of hell. I don't want to be accused of supporting the Republican candidates but on the other hand piling on them in support of the Democrats is puke-worthy too.

We really don't know what is the truth? Many residents are saying one thing; local authorities and media are saying another.

For the record, yes ... there are many good Haitians. Many Christians. too. But, like with all people groups, there are 'the good' and 'the not so good'. The more nefarious.

It is not a secret, that voodoo is practiced in Haiti. In voodoo, animal sacrifices are practiced. There are been reports in Springfield of what appears to be evidence of animal sacrifices (dead pig heads, etc.). So, it is not just the 'eating' of animals, but also the sacrificing of them, that has the people there concerned. And some persons in Springfield claim there are Haitians there practicing voodoo against the local residents. (Who knows what is true, but what a spiritual battleground Springfield has potentially become!)

But it is not uncommon for these kind of stories not to hit the local news. I was told years ago that there are many satanists living in my area ... within local government, business owners, etc. ... and they've been here for many years now. The police do know about these things, but we don't publicly hear about any of it. (I've heard, because I know ministers here who have personally encountered these people and know the history.) But, perhaps like the satanists, the voodoo-ites in Springfield are now being protected. (Freedom of religion?)

It seems like much of the true story in Springfield is currently being swept under the rug by local authorities and the media. They are working hard to 'clean up' the story, in the hopes that it will 'go away'. That is the sense I get, from the media and local authorities here. So I don't know if, or when, we will ever know the true story of Springfield. But, it is a mess there.

Cooking and eating a cat is neither good nor bad in itself. So I don't particularly care if people eat feral cats. I suppose it's even a public service.

Oh gosh ... you are definitely not a cat lover, are you??? ^_^

Here in America, I don't know that it's considered acceptable to eat cats ... feral or otherwise ... but I do know it's done in other countries. That is the problem with bringing in immigrants that aren't being properly assimilated into American society. But who knows ... if enough of them come here, perhaps they will succeed in replacing us, they will change all our American ways, and we will become more like them!!

(Time will tell ... )

We have one cat in the house. The deal is I don't eat it and it doesn't eat me.

It was a largely free country where we once more or less minded our own business, but then again we were more or less decent too.

I'll believe the actual residents living with these people over politicians who need to set a narrative one way or another. And the residents say this is happening. Are the bishops and the governor calling the residents liars?

The MSM hates him.

Sad, really.

On this I want receipts.

Source residents saying this is happening

WITH FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE AND CREDIBILITY - not some Ruzzian AI bot stuff.

Please.

You won't find any. It's a blood liable against a group of people almost everyone in Springfield says are a Godsend that saved their town.

Sword,

Use your head a little. Eating a cat, or a dog or a goose from some pond somewhere is an act of under desperation against starvation. Are you seriously, telling me it's EASIER to kill and butcher a domesticated pet than to get a bag of canned goods from the nearest Catholic food shelf ?

Have we, as Catholics, sunk so low that we can't help staving people?

And...

....btw....

The Haitians aren't staving, they are actually driving up house prices because of all the money they've earned and paid taxes on.

Turn offf your internetwebs and go sit in some grass somewhere, you're being lead down a path you really don't want to be on.

The alternative is that you actually believe Haitians eat domesticated pets because they want to and like them or something.

Do you really want to die on THAT hill?

Riles:

I beg you don't die on this hill.

This one: it's a lie. A damn, blood liable lie.

5 minutes on your favorite search engine will show it's a lie.

Pick your fights my friends, you can't trust your political allies.

Harris got the 45th president upset and confused and angry during the debate and, out of the depths of his addled mind, he pulled this relatively obscure lie bumping around on X. It was a mistake on his part.

Thanks for the blessing from before on that post....

My only point was people claim anything Trump says is a lie without thinking for themselves. That’s all.

I am thanking God, my friend.
I never said I liked Trump that much. Beyond his words, I don't want to think. I am not saying he is completely truthful, either. He said the version of HIS truth.
