  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It is asphyxiation. It took some time to die in the case of the prisoner in question. What we know about his death from the eyewitness is that he struggled.

In any case it is a method of extermination vets will not use on humanitarian grounds.
I think Ohio got it right in 2014, with the human head ripping off machine.

They could probably send the death row inmates to work in a meat processing plant. They'd probably die sooner than on death row, we'd get some productive work out of them, and we'd get a discount on their last meal.

I think it is because animals are put to sleep by professionals and the medical profession's ethics very properly prevent them from killing people.
Unless it's an assisted suicide or abortion. Then it's fine.

Look, if we want to do this humanely then put them to sleep. Allow the executioners use the drugs that do it. It's not that hard.

I like it. Good idea.

Miller actually elected to die by nitrogen asphyxiation.

The first time he had been scheduled to die by injection because the state misplaced the paperwork of his request. A judge delayed that execution.

This is part of the problem. The method adopted was used in Alabama on another prisoner and was demonstrably inhumane. Hanging and shooting were faster - instantaneous if properly carried out.

Vets tried the nitrogen asphyxiation method and abandoned it because it was inhumane. That is to say - it is a slow, inefficient and causes a painful death. It is not the job of justice departments to carry out experiments in killing people. That was Josef Mengele's job.
This is just wrong.

Nitrogen asphyxiation is quick and painless. This is why people have been killed in industrial accidents through nitrogen asphyxiation.

The problem comes about in that the seal on the mask is not perfect. It doesn't take much oxygen getting in to keep the person alive and if he's told he's about to die, he's likely not cooperating and is doing whatever he can to break the seal on the gas mask. The little bit of oxygen getting in causes the execution to take longer and the person is likely to feel some pain. Possible solutions are:

1. Don't let the state put people to death. Enforce life imprisonment without parole.

2. Superglue the mask on to prevent breaking of the seal. Don't tell the condemned when the nitrogen is being turned on.
