  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of WOMEN

David lamented for Jonathan in 2S 1:

25 “How the mighty have fallen
in the midst of the battle!
“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
26I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;
your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
27 “How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished!”

David was not alone in this expression. There is a Chinese proverb: 兄弟如手足,妻子如衣服. Brothers are like hands and feet; wives are like clothing. The proverb was derived from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 15. Liu Bei compared one of his sworn brothers to his hand and foot, something like this: If I lose my wife, I can replace her with a new one, but I cannot replace my hand or foot.

The Greeks had a similar concept. These were examples of platonic love.

In the NT, Jesus went one step further and commanded us to love one another (Jn 13:34). In several of Paul's letters, he instructed believers to greet one another with a holy or brotherly kiss (1Th 5:26).

If a wife is perceived as 'easily' replaceable relative to a sworn brother I would argue that points to a marital situation and expectations that are very different from today. I can't say it's inherently bad, but nowadays people expect 'connection' in marriage at multiple levels: social, emotional, spiritual en physical. Would a Chinese wife in those days also speak of her husband as replaceable? Just curious .. :)

Liu Bei spoke that around 210 CE. He was one of the three kings ruling China then. It was a chaotic era of constant fighting. A general had more value than a wife, and the king's consorts would not dare disobey. Queen Vashti refused King Xerxes. If it had happened in China, the queen would have been summarily executed without any hesitation or consultation. The rich and the powerful in China demanded more obedience from their wives.

Now, the situation was different for the average farmer and his wife. A beautiful wife was not easily replaceable. Neither was a hard-working husband. There was more equality between a farmer and his wife :)

It's seldom found in churches today, rather you have cliques.

David and Johnathan demonstrated their love in their commitment no matter what. They must have had some great prayer walks too. They both thought "out of the box" David with his way of taking the giant Goliath down. and Johnathan with his way of taking the Philistine outpost down, which led to their entire army collapsing.

"They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions" great heroes of the faith, filled with the Holy Spirit and genuine love and dedication.
