  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ephesians 6:

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3“that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Colossians 3:

20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
When you are living with your parents, you should obey them closely. But always obey God first. When you are not, you have more personal freedom. Even then, we have obligations, 1 Timothy 5:

4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.

The question then arises if one is still supposed to obey them once one is an adult? For example, if one had a nuclear family living together, with multiple generations, and there is a conflict between a grandmother and a mother on how best to raise children, does the Bible indicate that the grandmother should ultimately have the final word?

Great question, one that hit me in the heart :)

When I was working in Iceland, my mother visited us. She didn't like the way I ordered my kids in some instances. She wasn't a Christian. After a few days, I got upset with her, raised my voice, and told her not to interfere with my teaching my kids. She was with us for a month.

After she left, I felt bad about raising my voice to my own mother. Some years later, she passed away. Now that I am an old man, I wish I had dealt with her differently. If I could have done it all over again, I would have just let her and followed her advice. They were minor, inconsequential behavior issues of my little kids anyway, and I only had to tolerate her for a month. My kids now do not remember anything that she said.

BTW, my blue-eyed wife got along beautifully with my mother who couldn't speak a word of English :)
