  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

NIV 1 John 2:

15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
ESV:

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

The genitive of possession stressed the person who owned something. In this case, the person was the Father. It was the Father's love, not a human's love.

For this verse, ESV translation was more faithful than NIV.

In Biblehub, 17 versions translate it as "of the Father". Only 3 translate it as "for the Father".

My translation:

If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him.
It is not your love for the Father that is not in you. The truth is that you do not have the Father's love in you. It is about the Father's love and not your love.

The truth is that you do not have the Father's love in you. It is about the Father's love and not your love.

For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son

Seems a little contradictory on the surface with

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him

But it is because he loved us and wanted to rescue us from it

A little like someone who loved a Prostitute enough to want to rescue her from Prostitution

I loved you enough to sacrifice my son to rescue you from what you were and where I found you
You were meant for better things; do not return to them
It was my love that pulled you out of them, after all

This is consistant with 1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Good point. See God loved the world. Should we? and follow up there

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

We are to focus on heavenly things ... not earthly things.
