Al Jazeera employees were actually holding hostages themselves in Gaza. And yes, they operate with no oversight whatever here to spread Qatari propaganda.
Personal anecdote time.
I get interviewed about once every two to three months for work, speaking about the commercial airline business to various media companies. This includes three interviews with Al Jazeera in the last two to three years.
As far as a news organisation goes, they've been nothing but professional from my perspective. Their producers are among the best I've interacted with. Sensible questions posed in a thoughtful and straightforward manner.
Conversely, the only time I have felt political bias creeping into an interview was with Sky News.
Al Jazeera is rather like Fox News or the WSJ. Their news organisation is excellent, but they are let down whenever their editorial bent is brought out into the open.
