  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Veteran actor Jon Voight has one of the most impressive careers in Hollywood, with an Academy Award, four Golden Globes and numerous other accolades under his belt. But according to the 85-year-old actor, all of it is meaningless without faith in Jesus Christ.

“I was raised Catholic, but I got a little bit away from it and made some very bad mistakes on my own,” the “Ray Donovan” actor told The Christian Post. “And then I got a wake-up call: I know that God is real, and I know that our whole lives are only meaningful in relation to God. I'm very fortunate to have had that understanding in my life … I've had an extended career because of it.”

For Voight, faith today serves as the cornerstone of his identity, and it informs everything he does: "As Christians, we have the great guidance of Jesus and His help from above. That’s all real, and it’s what gives us hope to become our greater selves,” he said. "Our souls are pieces of God, pure God each one of our souls. Once we stand up to that and identify ourselves as that, our lives change."

I will always remember Reagan most for busting the Air Traffic Controllers' Union. That struck a huge blow to unions all over the country, as they lost some of their power---and they suffered wage stagnation, job loss, and all the other terrible things that can happen when workers lose representation.

It was also the start of income inequality--as the rich grew richer and richer and the middle class grew smaller and smaller.

Of course, George HW Bush was president when the Berlin Wall fell (November, 1989.) Bush had been the ambassador to China for years, and I feel sure that a lot of the good things that happened in foreign policy during the Reagan administration were heavily dependent on his knowledge and experience.

I will enjoy watching the movie. Jon Voight is an amazing actor and since his political positions are in alignment with the movie's topic the role is probably a walk in the park for him.

I don't share his opinions, and don't feel his being in a Reagan movie gives him any special expertise or insights into today's political situation.
