  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Matthew 24 shows us that our Lord Jesus Christ expects us to be keeping the Sabbath up to His second coming. So why are you not keeping it?

Please follow along.
There are three questions asked by the Apostles in verse 3. First is when shall the Temple be destroyed. The second is when shall be the sign of Jesus' coming. And the third is when shall be the end of the world.
.
Matt 24:2,3

All three questions are answered as one. Everything Jesus says is connected to what is previously stated by the use of particles, conjunctive particles and adverbs. These conjunctive particles are "and" which is copulative and sometimes cumulative in nature. "For", which assigns a reason to what was previously stated. "But" which is adversative or continuative in nature.

Verse 9 starts with the adverb then. Everything previously stated leads up to this point by the use of the particles, for in verse 5 and in verse 6, and for in verse 7. And all this is said in direct context to verse 6 in respect to the end being not yet.

Matt 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Matt 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Matt 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Matt 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Matt 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Matt 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.

But that is not the end of it. Jesus continues in verses 10-14 with the conjunctive particle and, and, and, but respectively. Which means he is continuing, adding on to what He had already said. It is all the same context tied together through the syntax.

In this respect he continues to tie everything he is about to say to what was previously stated in verse 6, that the end not yet. There is not a break. It is the same context. And that context is in respect the end not yet being.

Matt 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Matt 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Matt 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Matt 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Matt 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Verses 15-20 are a little different in the words being used. Verse 15 starts off with two conjunctive particles. These words as you can see are when and therefore. THESE words are continuative in nature.
And the word "see" in verse 15 is being said in the second person. So we get, "when you therefore see". The words "when ye therefore" tie into what Jesus already said, to what he is about to say. Because the word therefore assigns a reason or consequence to what was previously stated. So the proceeding text adds to what was said in respect to what will occur before the end that is not yet. And it says when you shall see the abomination of desolations spoken by Daniel standing in the Holy Place.

The abomination of desolation mentioned is the culmination of the signs in which we will see in relation to the question as to when the end is in verse 3. Verses 6,13 and 14 solidify this context in that they mention the end. When we see the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place we are instructed, if in Judea to flee into the Mountains quickly. And to pray that our flight not be in the winter nor on the Sabbath Day. Since we see that this prophecy is about when the end is, we see that this is speaking of the time right before Jesus, coming and the end of this world. As was said, verses 6 and 13 have set the context to which Jesus is speaking. And the context is the answer as to when the end would be. Keep in mind Jesus is talking to His Apostles, the first Christians. Therefore He is speaking to us through them.

Matt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand
Matt 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Matt 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
Matt 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
Matt 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
Matt 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

As you can see in respect to when the end shall be, our Lord and Savior councils us in verse 20 to flee when we see the abomination of desolation standing in the Holy Place, and to pray that our flight not be in the winter nor on the Sabbath Day. Which means prior to the end Jesus expected His followers, us to be resting on the Sabbath and keeping the day Holy. The fact that Judea is mentioned means that the abomination of desolation standing in the Holy Place is tied to that region. Whether it is being said in respect to the destruction of the Temple or something else is subject to debate. Most believe it is. We would teach the abomination of desolation would be the building of it in the name of our God and Father rather than the destruction if anything. Even the very site in which it was is nothing since we are now the Temple and God's Spirit dwells in us through Christ. A building of a third Temple would be a direct affront unto our God and all He did for us in Christ.

As He continues, He tells us why we should flee by using the word "for" in verse 21. He says, for then, during the abomination of desolation. There shall be a great tribulation, as never was.

And as He proceeds He uses the word "and" connecting what is about to be said to what was previously stated in relation to when the end would be because He is continuing in the same context. The use of the word "and" proves this. He says unless this tribulation be shorten there would be none of us left. And at this time when He explains the tribulation is shortened, He uses the word then. Which connects what is about to be said to what was already stated as to when shall the end be. He says in relation to the end of this tribulation, then at this moment, many false Christs shall arrive showing great signs and wonders. And if it were possible they would deceive the very elect, us. He says Believe it not. For behold as I have told you before. As lighten cometh out of the east and shineth even unto the west so also shall be the coming of the Son of man be.

Matt 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Matt 24:22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
Matt 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
Matt 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
Matt 24:25 Behold, I have told you before.
Matt 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.
Matt 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

So with that, what we see so far is the signs as to when the end will be close. And as we see these signs we are called to flee and hope that are flight not be in the winter neither on the Sabbath day. In the mention of the Sabbath we see that Jesus expects His follows to still be resting on the Sabbath Day and keeping it Holy. So with that stated they, we will be caught off guard and consequently it will be harder on us.

And at this moment that we are fleeing there shall be tribulation as there has never been before. And after this tribulation is shortened for our sake we shall also start seeing incredible, miraculous signs and wonders being done by those whom profess to be Christ. Saying He is here and there. Believe it not Jesus says, For as lightening cometh from the east and shineth even unto the west even so shall the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcass is due to the tribulation that is shortened, there will the eagles be gathered together.

Then immediately after these days of tribulation that are shortened, the sun shall be darkened, the moon shall not give her light, the stars shall fall from heaven and the very powers of heaven shall be shaken. All this is closely connected in time according the context. We know this because He uses the word "then" He says, then shall appear the Son of man in Heaven after the signs in heaven just mentioned. Which are Immediately after the tribulation that is after the abomination of desolation. Everything is closely connected. And as you can see during the time that Jesus returns because it is closely connect to the abomination of desolation Jesus expected His followers to be keeping the Sabbath. Because He said to His Apostles, who where the leaders in the church and would not be around but would teach Jesus' prophecy here to pray that our flight not be in the winter nor on the Sabbath Day.

As Jesus continues He says, And all the tribes of the earth shall mourn as they see the Son of man coming in the clouds of Heaven with power and great Glory. And at this time He says He shall send His Angels with the sound of a great Trumpet. And they shall gather together the elect who were not deceived. From one end of heaven unto another.

This is speaking of the final judgment. ALL the tribes on earth have not mourned because of seeing the Son of Man coming in the clouds. And the Trumpet has not sounded, and Angels have not been sent to gather the elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. This without a doubt is speaking of the End of our time, generation in general and the final judgment.

Matt 24:28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
Matt 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
Matt 24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Matt 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The clause in verse 33, "All these things" includes everything mentioned from verses 5-31. Due to the fact that they connect in context by the grammar and syntax as shown above.

Matt 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
Matt 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

To even further the general context is speaking of His 2nd coming and judgment. He begins to compare His coming in the clouds with the angel to gather the elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven unto the other to Noah and the flood.

Matt 24:36-42

Then He compares being ready for His coming in the clouds with the angel to gather the elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven unto the other to someone having their house broken into. And if they would have been paying attention to the signs they would have been ready and would not have suffered their house to be broken into. Being caught unaware when He comes in the clouds with His Angels to gather the elect

Matt 24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Matt 24:44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

Then He speaks of rewards to the faithful and wise servant whom is ready when He comes. But the evil servant whom is not ready but says our Lord delays He shall cut asunder and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matt 24:45-51

And that is not it. Still in the same context He continues but adds something to His coming in the clouds to gather the elect. He calls us who are waiting the Kingdom of Heaven. And in this compares us to virgins who are awaiting the bride-groom and need to be wise and make sure we our Lamps are trimmed and full so that we are able to see our Lord when He comes to take us to be His wife. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh to gather His Bride, the elect.

Matt 25:1-13

And if that were not enough, He continues with the same premise of His coming in the clouds with His angels to gather the elect and the passing of Judgement. And as He continues he goes on to call us His servants the Kingdom of Heaven and say we His servant have received talents, goods and that when He comes back he expects to see that there has been an increase to what He has given us. And if there is no increase we will be cast out unto utter darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matt 25:14-30

Then Jesus speaks more bluntly. He says directly that when He comes in his glory with the Angels He shall sit in the throne of judgement and gather ALL nations before Him. And He shall divide the sheep from the goats. The sheep to the right, the goats unto the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. But unto the left, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Matt 25:31-46

So, in closing all this has not been fulfilled because Jesus has not come in the clouds to gather the elect for the final judgment. And as was shown above all this is connected closely in time. SO the abomination of desolation and great tribulation has not happened yet. Nor has the Sun been darkened in respect to this prophecy as well as the stars falling and the moon not giving her light anymore. All these things are closely connected in time. And when it starts we shal know His second coming and judgment is close. And the end of this age is near.

So pray as our Lord Jesus Christ instructed that when the great tribulation starts right after the abomination of desolation, that our flight from it not be in the winter nor the Sabbath Day. The winter because it will make our journey even more difficult. And the Sabbath because on the Seventh Day we will be resting from our secular labors and in keeping the Day Holy we will be caught up in worship and what not and will be caught off guard.

Please follow along.
There are three questions asked by the Apostles in verse 3. First is when shall the Temple be destroyed. The second is when shall be the sign of Jesus' coming. And the third is when shall be the end of the world.

Matt 24:2,3

All three questions are answered as one. Everything Jesus says is connected to what is previously stated by the use of particles, conjunctive particles and adverbs. These conjunctive particles are "and" which is copulative and sometimes cumulative in nature. "For", which assigns a reason to what was previously stated. Thanks for sharing! I would like to understand what is meant by " keeping Sabbath" . I pulled up this article that details the several versions of the observance of this day. Which one is a Christian expected to follow? Better yet, maybe you have your own personal list? Thanks for helping me understand. Blessings.

Hi Maria! May our Lord and God continue to bless us all in His Way Jesus Christ.

Did you read the post?

As to your question. We are to rest as the commandment says. And We are called to keep the day holy. Which means we are not to defile it by sin and things that lead us into it. So we do things to keep from sin and wickedness so we stay centered on God's way. That would include, prayer and praise. Singing songs and spiritual songs making a melody in our hearts unto the Lord, Bible study, Worship and resting. We are called to do ministerial things also. So if we are so called by God that is fine also.

Ministerial work is actually part of our rest in God through Christ. It is a fruit of the Spirit. So if we find ourselves being burdened by doing so, then chances are we are not doing what we ought and should stop. Let God be the judge in that.

Hi Maria! May our Lord and God continue to bless us all in His Way Jesus Christ.

Did you read the post?

As to your question. We are to rest as the commandment says. And We are called to keep the day holy. Which means we are not to defile it by sin and things that lead us into it.
Last Saturday I attended a very conservative SDA church. The message was on the Sabbath. I wish I would have counted the times the speaker and the others on the platform said
sabbath. The sermon must have been a complete failure as I stood in the foyer after the benediction listening to the conversations. Every one of them was on secular topics. I don't fault any of the people standing in that foyer including myself because I know we are not under the Sabbath command of the old covenant and it is natural to bond with others when we have a chance. Jesus knows our hearts and the is why He came to this Earth to put an end to the Law that Israel failed to keep.
We are called to keep from sin every day so that we can stay centered on Jesus. Why do you limit not sinning to just one day? I certainly do not understand your post Remember God has never required Gentiles to observe any day. As for the Jews, He came to bring their ritual laws to an end.
Ministerial work is actually part of our rest in God through Christ.
Rest???
Ministerial work is actually part of our rest in God through Christ. It is a fruit of the Spirit. So if we find ourselves being burdened by doing so, then chances are we are not doing what we ought and should stop. Let God be the judge in that.
That is certainly a convoluted statement.

Wasn't Jesus' statement to those living in Jerusalem for the time they would be invaded? It is not "our flight" It was the Jews flight and it isn't "we" who would be resting it was the Jews. If the invasion had happened on a Wednesday wouldn't it have been a surprise? Why would fleeing on the Sabbath be any more of a burden than any other day? If it happened on the Sabbath were they to just allow the enemy to kill them rather than try to protect themselves?

The reason that is most likely that Jesus warned them about the Sabbath is because the gates to the city would be closed and there would not have been a way to escape. Since Jesus is God He saw the future and knew that not all at that time would have freed themselves from the done-away ritual days.

SDA take their cue from the writings of Ellen White on the subject of persecution and fleeing to safety. I would like to know where a person would flee to in the USA that would be a safe place to hide?

Thanks for sharing! I would like to understand what is meant by " keeping Sabbath" . I pulled up this article that details the several versions of the observance of this day. Which one is a Christian expected to follow? Better yet, maybe you have your own personal list? Thanks for helping me understand. Blessings.

Isaiah 58:13-14 (NKJV): 13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, 14 Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; And I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, And feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken."

The OP proves that Jesus is speaking of the end time not that. If you disagree then address the points made in the OP.

Thanks for providing the scripture however, it does not address my question. How is Sabbath observed? What is expected from the Christian ?

Ok. The list surrounds itself with the concept of "rest " . This, according to your list, encompasses these elements:

avoid sin
prayer
praise
biblical study
minister
worship

I can honestly say that I do all of these pretty much everyday.
Now is there more to this list? I know that in Judaism, there are many, many more commands including no driving, cooking, working etc. Please clarify?
Thanks!

Oh! what about verses 32-35? “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33 Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. 34 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. And, of course, there is the beginning of the chapter where Jesus is expounding on the Temple being destroyed which happened seventy years later. Your OP is certainly not cut and dried. Much of the prophecy was dealing with Jerusalem and the people being killed or captured. They were to flee to the mountains and hopefully, it wouldn't be on the Sabbath because the Jews would have the gates closed so they would be trapped. The scenario Jesus portrayed certainly wouldn't fit with the Jews and other Sabbath observers living in large cities like New York City.

Do you do this 24/7 7 days a week and never garden, work out, discuss politics or anything non-religious,, do household work, work a job, go grocery shopping and focus 7 days a week 24 hours 100% on Jesus. This is not realistic nor is it obeying the commandment to work 6 days. Exo 20:9 Jesus understands we need to get work and labors done which is why He gives us 6 days to do so and only asks for the seventh day to be kept aside as holy. Exo 20:8-11

There is no scripture that says we can't drive on the Sabbath or eat on the Sabbath, all major cooking should be done on the Preparation Day for the Sabbath. If one is so focused on what we can't do on the Sabbath, they sadly miss out on the real blessing and that is resting in Christ on His holy day focusing on Him. Isa 58:13. We of course should worship God every day, but that does not make every day the Sabbath, nor does it mean we don't have a moral obligation to obey God and His commandments.

I disagree that we should not sin only on the Sabbath, but on any day. I don’t think the author meant it that way though.

In regards to how to keep the Sabbath…what does God’s Word teach

1. We are to keep it holy Exo 20:8 meaning no secular work, why we rest from works and labors.
2. It’s the day to honor God doing His ways Isa 58:13 thus saith the Lord
3. It’s a holy convocation Lev 23:3 (gathering) Church is how Jesus and the apostles kept it Luke 4:16 Acts 18:4
4. Prayer Acts 16:3
5. Studying God‘s Word Acts 13:42 Acts 13:44
6. Reasoning with the scriptures (witness) Acts 17:2
7. Helping people if in need by the example of Jesus through healing and emergencies

The Bible is filled with ways to keep God’s Sabbath holy. Its how we serve Him Isa 56:1-6 how He sanctifies us Eze 20:12 and how we know we are worshipping the One True God of Creation Exo 20:11 Eze 20:20 which is the same God as Judgement Rev 14:7. He is everlasting and changes not. Either does His holy and righteous law Psa 119:172 Psa 119:142 Mat 5:18-19 Rev 22:14 Isa 66:22-23

This is just another cop-out Him. I read your OP and you have made some good points. I in return have made some points that I believe are relevant to Jesus' prophecy. What you are doing is to try to make the Sabbath relevant today. We know it isn't because of all the information found in the New Testament.

Get real brother, what would make fleeing today any harder on Saturday than on Friday? WE aren't surrounded by closed gates are we? In fact, Fridays are more congested traffic-wise than any other day of the week. Another thing, where would anyone flee today? Another thought, do you really believe all worshipers of God would be attacked by non believers at the same time? That would be a well-coordinated effort now, wouldn't it.

Thanks for providing the scripture however, it does not address my question. How is Sabbath observed? What is expected from the Christian ?
Hi maria, you do not have to observe like the Jewish people, they have developed their own complex ritual and Christ criticized the religious authorities, the pharisees and sadducees heavily for adding to something simple, they made it a burden! It does not need to be.

The bible says no work and to rest, honour God, study the word of GOD, basically consecrate the day to him alone or with your family. Let go of the normal activities, do not do anything physical unless you need to help someone in need.. Tv, internet no, unless it is used to study and learn about God, like coming to these christian forums for example.
Prepare meals beforehand do your shopping before the sabbath. do not buy or sell on the sabbath.

The sabbath starts Friday at sundown and ends Saturday at sundown. This is not interchangeable, even of the majority thinks it is OK, God says differently, it is clearly stated the seventh day.

Exodus 31:13 KJV: "Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you."

To GOD the proper day is important as God also rested from creation on the seventh day. we are created in God's image for a reason, we can be part of His family. see John 17, read carefully, in it you will find what we can become, One with GOD as Jesus is One with GOD!

Jhn 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

Jhn 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

Jhn 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

Jhn 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

I quoted it so how is that ignored. How do you know how I keep the Sabbath- we are strangers on the Internet you have no idea what I do. Even if I didn't keep the Sabbath according to the commandment that only God knows what I and everyone else does, does not deletes someone else's moral obligation to obey God's commandments. We are not Judged on a sliding scale. God destroyed everyone but 8 people previously. He doesn't give one a pass because so and so didn't obey Him. We each stand before Him come Judgement day based on what we do. Ecc 12:13-14 2 Cor 5:10 Rev 22:14-15

Hello Bob, in the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, Jesus instructs His disciples to go into all the world and spread His teachings. One key passage is from Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV), where Jesus says, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." Here, Jesus is commissioning His disciples to make disciples of all nations, teaching them to follow everything He has commanded, which includes His teachings on the Kingdom of Heaven, repentance, life, morality ( the 10 commandments), and salvation.

Another significant verse is Mark 16:15 (KJV), where Jesus commands, "And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."

In Luke 24:47 (KJV), Jesus instructs, "And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem." This passage highlights that the message of repentance and forgiveness of sins in Jesus’ name is to be preached to all nations, starting from Jerusalem and extending throughout the world.

Yes Jesus came to preach first to israel but he DID send his disciples to all the world.
These passages above outline the mission given to the disciples to spread Jesus' teachings and all of his message to people everywhere, teaching them to follow His commands and offering the message of repentance and forgiveness.

Blessings.

Hi JFF, With your understanding what is the Gospel we are to preach to the World?

I have a few thoughts, one is that morality has been and forever will be one lesson. Morality has to do with how we treat God and our fellow man. In Jn 15 Jesus tells us he kept His father's commands and asks that we keep His command. His command, according to His own word, is to love others as He loves us. To me, that would be the highest thing on the list to teach the World.

Jesus came to this Earth to provide a way of salvation for lost Israel. He came and lived under the old covenant laws given to them by God. They were to honor those laws until the new covenant was ratified at Calvary. Now Jews are not under the old way. All mankind is under the new and better covenant that Paul and others have provided.
