  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the greatest threat to the church in our generation?

I have a list of three or four things that could be a threat to the church in the 21st century: Politicians (from both sides, especially the far-left and far-right), fundamentalist pastors/priests (including folks who twist and cherry pick the Bible verses), and the entertainment industry.

What do you guys/gals think?

Churches tend to be communities that agree with a pastor, so dialogue on issues is difficult. A house divided.

(the threats don't matter since communication is greatly obscured)

Even if these scriptures are talking about the tribulation as some suggest, the affects of sin and the world system are hurting the faith and love of many now. I pray we can all find a refuge in God and be strong to the end.

Matthew 24:12 (KJV)
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

Luke 18:8 (KJV)
8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

BTW, according to the lastest Barna report, only 37% of all pastors in the US have a Biblical worldview. Interview here:
This is interesting, since it was said in 2004 it was 50%. It indicates we are approaching the last of the last days, since Paul prophesied a major apostasy in the end times. We're seeing it right before our eyes.

I recommend this documentary:
I've seen it twice, and consider it important education for all Christians in the US. There are maybe 2 or 3 statements in the whole 2 hr 12 min. documentary that I questioned. Here is the trailer:

Here is a mildly opposing review of the film:

Yep, we are in the end times. Churches focus on spreading both far-left and far-right politics instead of Biblical content, and many churches in 2024 are sadly open to the woke agenda.

I'd be willing to bet they define "Biblical worldview" in narrow and contested terms.

A Biblical worldview is one in which decisions are made based on what the Bible says.

A Biblical worldview is one in which decisions are made based on what the Bible says.
And yet two people can make different decisions, both based on " what the Bible says."

... I know there's many choices to pick from by which to answer the OP question, but I'm still going with the old-standby of "Satan" as my answer. :sorry:

From here: Competing Worldviews Influence Today’s Christians - Barna Group

Barna defines “biblical worldview” as believing that absolute moral truth exists; the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches; Satan is considered to be a real being or force, not merely symbolic; a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or do good works; Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth; and God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today.

I'd want to see the actual questions they're asking, though. For example, they cite as demonstrating a belief in karma, the idea that people will receive good if they do good; but that could also draw on (for example) St. Paul saying that we reap what we sow.

<snipped> that church sold out the Kingdom and rejoined the world of man 1700 years ago and has not repented yet.
Christians.

Churches tend to be communities that agree with a pastor<snip>
Seems like neither side has a clue what Jesus was about. But this of course is typical of US thinking.

Satan: true as long as its not a cop out for lazy believers who refuse to examine themselves, and find him within themselves.
