  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

“Miriam, I watched (Sheldon Adelson, her late husband) sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian, it’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor, but civilian version. It’s actually much better, because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor – that’s soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets, or they’re dead,” Trump said.

“She gets it and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal,”

He's not wrong. The medal of honor is awarded to veterans, not their wives.
Do you think he is right here?

Does everyone get the Congressional Medal of Honor - or every soldier?

What the heck is he even going on about? Its bizarre.
I couldnt follow the words, so I tried looking at the hands - which actually were doing more work than the lips. Still not entirely helpful.

Trump said the Medal of Freedom is "much better" than the Congressional Medal of Honor. That is very wrong.

So obsessed with status. Which thing is how much better than the other thing. And ratings. And crowd size. And so on.

What he said is odd, but it looks like typical Trump Ramble (TM). Not really seeing it as an insult.

If anything awarding the Medal Of Freedom to campaign donors and low level muscle like Jim Jordan and Devin Nunes has seriously devalued it.
Also the percentage of athletes on the Trump awardee list is absurd.

I don't think it's intended as an insult, but it's thoughtless and disrespectful, and it indicates that he doesn't understand the meaning behind the MoH. Saying that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is "better" because you'll be alive/healthy to enjoy it completely ignores the fact that the MoH is a recognition of sacrifice and heroism - nobody wants to earn the Medal of Honor.

I can usually tease out a charitable interpretation of his nonsense, but this… This one has me stumped.

That I can agree with
- nobody wants to earn the Medal of Honor.
That I disagree with. Nobody wants to receive it as posthumous award. I would of loved to have earned one if I made it through. :p

I meant in the sense that no one (at least no one sane) joins the military intending to receive the MoH. And I'd be willing to bet that most, if not all, MoH recipients would gladly give it back if it meant that the circumstances under which they earned it never happened.

It was definitely an insult.

insult:

verb - speak to or treat with disrespect or scornful abuse.

noun - a disrespectful or scornfully abusive remark or action.

To say that a civilian award is better than an award that represents the utmost devotion, courage, and dedication by those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty while serving our country is indeed an insult. There is no equivalent to the Congressional Medal of Honor in the United States, and in normal times, a statement like the one Trump made would be an instant game-ender for a presidential campaign.

No, only military personnel that go above and beyond and usually sacrifice their lives saving others while in combat. The Bronze Star is perhaps the most awarded medal for bravery.

He said it sarcastically, in that the Medal of Freedom award, the person who receives it is in good phycical health where
the Medal of Honor winner is either physically wounded or dead.

Much of what he says is in the line of sarcasm and humor.

Certainly nobody wants to go through the hell it takes to be awarded the MoH. I've spoken to several MoH awardees (never call them "winners") who all would rather not have had to go through that situation, and none of them got through the situation with the "hope" of that award. Something like the Bronze Star, yeah, that's an expectation when one has been in combat, and a Silver Star might become an expectation. I've never spoken to or heard of an MoH awardee who thought for himself that he should be considered for the MoH...that's something that occurs to other people about someone, something that other people fight for on their behalf.
