  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In what sense are believers not under the law?

Before Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, people were under the condemnation of the law. Jesus died to release the Paraclete who dwells in believers. Romans 6:

14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Under grace, we have a new life in our spirit with the Paraclete. Galatians 5:

18 If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
We are no longer led by the law, but by the Paraclete of peace in our conscience.

Under the law means under the curse of the law (Gal 3:13), from which Christ redeemed us and to which we are no longer subject.

This is exactly what I was going to say before I saw your post. And the reason why the law was a curse can be seen in the previous verses.

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

So, the reason the law was a curse is because the only way someone could be justified by keeping the law is by continuing to do "all things which are written in the book of the law" perfectly without fail, which is not possible for anyone to do besides Jesus. As it says in James 2:10, if you break even one of the commandments of the law, you are guilty of breaking all of them. It's an impossible standard to live up to and that's why it's a curse for anyone who thinks they can be justified by keeping the works of the law.
