  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

DETROIT (AP) — A teenager on a field trip to see a Detroit court ended up in jail clothes and handcuffs because a judge said he didn’t like her attitude.
Judge Kenneth King even asked other kids in the courtroom Tuesday whether the 16-year-old girl should be taken to juvenile detention, WXYZ-TV reported.
King, who works at 36th District Court, defended his actions.
“I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail. That was my own version of ‘Scared Straight,’” King said, referring to a documentary about teen offenders in New Jersey.
The teen was seeing King’s court as part of a visit organized by The Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit environmental group. During the visit, King noticed the girl falling asleep, WXYZ reported.
“You fall asleep in my courtroom one more time, I’m gonna put you in back, understood?” the judge said, according to video of his remarks.

Wow, I hope he's not a family court Judge.

Who did she think she was, Donald Trump?

When I retired, I became a science teacher for a few years. Kids would fall asleep in class sometimes. I noticed that the more stuff they were involved in doing, the less that happened. But teen biology and diurnal rhythms being what they are, it happens.

Once, a kid fell asleep in my class during a lecture. I signaled to the class to be quiet, took them out of the room, turned off the lights and finished up the class on the patio.

He never fell asleep in class again. Couple of years later, his brother shows up in my class.
"You remember Travis Rodriquez?" (not real name)

"Yep."

"I'm his brother."

"Ah. What did he say about me?"

"He said 'don't fall asleep in class.'"

Edit: and yes, the judge was completely out of line. Way too impressed with his own importance.

"That was my own version of ‘Scared Straight"

This was the worst part for me for two reasons. First off, Scared Straight has been shown to actually not be effective. Second, and more importantly, here, it's a voluntary program. This was just a vanilla case of abuse of power.

Here is the updated article. The judge was thankfully sidelined. That was some unacceptable behavior from a judge, and he even left the student traumatized.

Quote from AP: "[Judge] King has been temporarily removed from his criminal case docket and will undergo 'necessary training to address the underlying issues that contributed to this incident,' said William McConico, the chief judge at 36th District Court."

Perhaps what he is impressed with is how difficult it is to get through to inner city youth. I wanted my son to do something to try to help them and make a difference. So he is working in his spare time as a volleyball coach. I noticed Laban James spends a lot of money trying to help young people become productive members of society.

All of the LeBron James Family Foundation’s work is rolled into the I PROMISE School, a Public School dedicated to those students who are already falling behind and in danger of falling through the cracks.

That's awful.

I've been in court and fallen asleep. It's boring.

Yep, the only justification for his behavior would be if he believed she was playacting, exaggerated yawning etc.

But the article gives zero evidence of this.

That's beyond weird.
Yep,a judge forgetting that they are not god. I wonder whether he thought they were exaggerating boredom, fake yawning etc. but serious misjudgement.

I think the Judge's major mistake was failing to mentally distinguish that this was a field trip and not an actual court session.

“You fall asleep in my courtroom one more time, I’m gonna put you in back, understood?” he fumed.

“One thing you’ll learn about my courtroom is I’m not a toy, I’m not to be played with.”

When the teen talked back to him, King ordered a court officer to slap handcuffs on her and make her wear a jumpsuit.

So it sounds like the chain of events was "he asks her not to fall asleep in his court room, and if it happens again, she'd be removed. It happened again, he asked that she be removed, and then she mouthed off to him, at which point he ordered that the cuffs be put on her"

This one has a more of a "full video" of the exchange. After the 2nd warning, he says "I'm having them send you to the back" and she snarkily says "I don't care", it was at that point he busted out the jumpsuit.

I felt the fuller video was at least important for some additional context, as the other mainstream outlets are reporting it in such a way to give the impression that she nodded off one time, and he had the bailiff racing over with the handcuffs. There was a little more to it than that.

If it were an actual trial of some sort, and the judge asks for a certain code of conduct in their courtroom, and you fail to abide by it, and they call you out for it with 2 separate warnings, and then they ask you to leave, and you back-sass them with "pfft, I don't care", then yes, it's at their legal discretion whether or not to order the bailiff to do something about it.

But again, this was a field trip...so sounds like quite a bit of an overreaction on the part of the judge.

That pretty much takes out my concern for her. He still should have used his head instead of playing into her behavior. But she asked for trouble.

Obviously it doesn't excuse his behavior...he's supposed to be the adult in the room (and a person who's supposed to use good judgement...it's sort of in his job title), it's a field trip with kids after all.

But, I just felt it was important to have a little additional context since I could already see some of the media outlets have been leveraging the "poor blameless victim routine" (complete with the "look, here's an unrelated childhood picture of them looking sweet and innocent" shtick)

A local affiliate ran a clip of someone on tiktok discussing the story showing this picture.

Had the judge just stopped at the "having her removed to go sit in another room after the 2nd warning", and let the back-sass slide off and ignored it, he would've done nothing wrong.
