In the case of 2a, we probably have to clarify that if you’re worried about, say, talking to your boss, then the evil is not the talking to him, but some awful outcome actually occurring from the discussion. If you dread talking to your boss, do it, and things end up going more or less fine, then it counts as a (1.) A 2a, by contrast, means you leave the meeting thinking “That was as awful as I expected it to be.”1.) The evils you worry about that happen, and divide it by
