  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

David hated those who cling to worthless idols. Should we?

Psalm 31:

6 I hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the LORD.
Psalm 26:

5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.
Psalm 139:

21 Do I not hate those who hate You, O LORD, and detest those who rise against You?
The psalmist bore hatred for some wicked people.

Did the above contradict Jesus’ teaching of loving one another?

No. At the last supper, Jesus addressed the disciples in Jn 13:

34 "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The command to love one another applies to disciples only. We cannot demand unbelievers to love us.

Did Ps 31:6 contradict loving your enemy?

In some sense, yes. Mt 5:

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Jesus came to die for sinners. Now, we have direct access to God's forgiveness through Jesus. By this grace given to us, we should not hate unbelievers but pray for them to turn to God.

The psalms still apply in that we should not participate in their evil acts.

Yup. The Psalms includes all kinds of human expressions of joy, grief, anger, repentance, longing, despair, etc. They are wonderful and valuable for study, worship, prayer, etc. But I don’t think they are the best place to go for doctrine and dogma. That doesn’t seem to be their role in general.

For example, from Psalm 137:9 :
Blessed the one who seizes your children and smashes them against the rock

We clearly aren’t going to use this as an instruction on how to think or behave, even if we might understand the impulse in a specific situation such as being in exile.
