  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I was pleasantly surprised to see the priest doing this prayer today. I initially couldn't recognize it because it had been so long since I'd looked at it. This was the first time I had ever experienced a priest using this prayer. I hope that I hear it again.

Which prayer was it? The priest at my church prayed for the Eucharistic ministers (the folks who hand out the communion). Also, it is good that you went to Mass today. :)

The prayer in the subject line - Eucharistic Prayer IV (Four). I don't know if you're familiar with the other Eucharistic Prayers.

I am not familiar with the prayer numbers, or Eucharistic prayers in general, cos I just go with the motions.

Oh I see. Unless you have some sort of Missal, you won't know what they are.

Yeah, I do not own a Missal, though, I do a Missal PDF on my computer. Maybe, I could test the limits of the AI on my computer, and ask it to quote Eucharistic Prayer IV. :) Right now, I am feeding the artificial intelligence a bunch of rules on sports, so next time I get confused on what is happening in a sporting event such as in the Olympics, the AI could answer for me.

Missals can be expensive. I drastically reduced the price of mine because I had some Amazon Rewards points to spare. However, if you have a Missal PDF that's awesome. That will be incredibly useful. Most priests tend to use Euch Prayer 3, unless it's a special Solemnity than they tend to do EP 1. They rarely if ever use EP 4 anymore. I thought it was kind of obsolete. It made me very happy to hear it today.

I have this one (2011 version) as a PDF. Congrats on getting yours for cheap. :) Anyways, it is getting late here, but tell me more about your Missal, and I can reply tomorrow. God bless, sister in Christ, and have a wonderful night.

The Eucharistic Prayer is part of what the priest prays after he prays over the offerings (after he prays "Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.").

There are four of these prayers, or canons, that can be chosen by the priest. The first is a loose translation of the TLM canon. The others are more inventive. All are valid. Of these I prefer Prayer 1, and go out of my way to thank the priest when they use it. An old pastor called it “that great prayer for holiness”.

Thanks :) It's this one. It's expensive at regular price but with my Rewards Points, I brought it down to around $28. It goes until the year 2042.
You are welcome. That seems like a good Missal. Maybe, we could give Iran these Missals, so instead of fighting wars with missiles, the Iranians can get into the Catholic faith and become peacemakers with Missals.

Holy moly, 2042? That is a long time from now.

Interesting stuff. :) Hopefully, my digital Missal has that prayer in it.

Nice, I remember that at our mass.

Agreed, the Roman Canon is the best. The Franciscan that was our chaplain in the EWTN DC offices for a long time, Fr Patrick Mary (now he offers Mass on the network down in Alabama) always prayed the Roman Canon when he offered Mass in our office chapel, and I thanked him for it as well. It's so much richer with all those saints and martyrs included.

I live in a diocese that mostly uses the Roman Canon but not always.

Eucharistic prayer IV is usually used, from my experience, during lent and advent.

It’s much more beautiful than the others one too. Some priests don’t like it because it’s too long. Oh well.

Love that your priest prayed Eucharist Prayer #4. I can’t remember when a priest prayed #4 and I’d love it if they did. Perhaps they have and I missed it. I’ll have to start listening carefully in the future.

The priests at my parish normally pray Eucharist Prayer 1 and some times number 3. We also pray the Confiteor at the beginning of every Mass, which I prefer.

The neighboring parish never prays the Confiteor and the priest only prays Eucharist Prayer #3.

My thread wasn't about which EP was best. I know that EP1 is extraordinary but it's a known fact that EP4 is said to be distinctive but barely said anymore, and I was delighted to realize that it was. That's all.
