  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My friends who are voting for Kamala - I have an honest question for you.

Can you express why you are supporting your candidate without mentioning Trump? What does she stand for, what has she accomplished that garners your vote?

I am supporting Kamala\Walz because they represent political policies and ideas that align with what I think will allow the greatest number of people to achieve higher levels of liberty and opportunity. Admittedly, I can't point to a single specific thing that she's done that I could say "this is why I am voting for her", but in this election it simply is enough that she is the nominee for the party I support and that I think will lead America in the direction that will benefit most Americans.

Disclaimers: 1) VP Harris is a very new presidential candidate, so I've only just begun my research on her record and her specific political positions. 2) I don't feel that I have a strong enough background in criminal justice to intelligently evaluate her actions as DA and attorney general.

With that said, here are the positive points that catch my eye:
- She seems to be strong on protecting the environment and promoting renewable energy.
- She has sponsored bills designed to protect workers' rights.
- She is pro-choice.
- She seems to be good on protecting LGBTQ rights, as far as I can tell.
- I've been taking for granted that protecting women's rights is important to her, given her own biography.
- She has taken some actions toward investigating and remedying racial disparities in healthcare outcomes.
- She supports single-payer healthcare.

That's enough points of agreement for her to get my vote. I assume we'll hear more about her political positions in the next couple of months. In the meantime, she has a record in the senate that we can look at.

I'm in favor of her policies around global warming and believe she would be able to handle an emergency by listening to those with expertise.

I think she supports the basic tenets of the Democratic Party. Things like public education (which is one of the most important issues in politics to me) women's reproductive rights, and the social safety net, along with the wealthy paying their fair share of taxes. She seems to tow the party line on all of these issues.

I've supported her as California Attorney General, California Senator, President (over Biden in the Democratic primaries), Vice-President, and nothing at all has changed my mind that she's highly competent, and both tough and smart on crime.

From 2020:

Speaking as a Californian, I've watched her career with great interest and support from when she became Attorney General of the state. I would say her law&order credibility put her in more moderate or even conservative territory for California, which puts her more moderate or slightly liberal nationally. And while a lot of people on the extreme left don't like her for the law&order resume, and there may be a temptation to run away from it, I think she should step into it.

I'm not that wild about Biden forgiving student loans to victims of predatory for-profit colleges. I much prefer Harris' solution:

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Obtains $1.1 Billion Judgment Against Predatory For-Profit School Operator

Harris and Walz support freedom.
-Freedom from a state sponsored religious ideology (Charles Kirk anyone?). Our patriots declared our independence from such non-sense 248 years ago.
-Freedom from the state dicatating who peole can love
- Freedom from the state dictating to women what choices they make with their bodies
- Freedom from an ideology that has no respect for the peaceful of power
- Freedom from living in a society where teenagers can gun down our school children and event poltiical candidates with weapons intended for ward.
