McDonald's says $5 value meal sales are hot as consumers feel 'pinch' of inflation

When I was a kid they had a five and ten cents store. Then latter on they had a Dollar store. Now $5 is a good deal. In the army they paid us $98 a month. Wages were set up so we took home $100 a week. I like to work and I would work if I got paid or not. But is good I did not care because we did not get paid much.

They use to talk about a shave and a haircut was two bits or 25 cents. My dad made 35 cents an hour and that was very good money because the going wage was 25 cents an hour.

Mine was only a little above room temperature when I got it the other day. ;)

Seriously though, I agree. I had mostly given up on fast food due to the prices and the $5 deal at McDonald's is great!

Hopefully, other places will take notice. The other morning I forgot my coffee and stopped by Dunkin to get one. I got a large regular coffee with cream and sugar. Nothing fancy. It was $3.75 with tax... That's just crazy.

It is not so great for your health. Hope you have good health insurance to pay for their procedures. Health care is becoming a scam also. They are happy to take your money and do very little more than evaluate you.

I'd be kind of surprised if these $5 meals weren't a loss leader just to get people back in the door.

It's also hard to believe that it's just prices that have driven people away. There are two Chik-fil-A's within a mile or two of my office; neither is any cheaper than McD's; but both are consistently packed at lunch; and one has a play area along with bussers who'll clear the table and bring crayons for the kids. OTOH, the McD's that's almost next door is deserted and has been redesigned to hide most of the workers in the back, with a bunch of self-serve kiosks, only one real register, no salads on the menu, and no refills. It's basically a Door Dash site with some indoor seating. I don't usually put much stock in the "experience" of a fast food joint, but the difference between those two is pretty stark.

McDonald's food isn't any worse than similar products and, given their small portion sizes, they're typically less-bad than what you'd get at sit-down restaurants.

Yeah - a lot of companies (not just in the fast food area) have done things to drive down their costs in order to maximize their profits that it really ends up hurting the consumers and in many cases the employees (or former employees if they have been a victim of a layoff).

Hopefully the balance will start to tip back the other way sooner or later..

The original McD's did not even have a indoors. They just served you though a window like they sell ice cream today.

They do MORE to try to scam people into thinking their food is healthy. There are women that feed their children McDonalds every day and they have a box full of toys to prove it. The do not see the harm they are doing.

I went through the diet and nutrition classes as a part of cardiac rehabilitation. I remember a man who was a VERY nice person and he owned a Dairy Queen. So he sold a lot of junk food and was sick from eating his own food. It was a struggle for him to confront that he was harming people.

They do? Where?

That's nice.

I'm perfectly capable of comparing the nutritional information from McD's with that of other restaurants - something I've done quite a bit - and it's clear that McD's is no worse than any other, similar establishment. As I noted, their small portion sizes work in their favor; I'd add that most of their items also aren't covered in a lot of sauce, which tends to be another big source of empty calories.

In their advertising. Nothing healthy about any of those options.
"Healthiest" is obviously relative, but there's nothing worse about their oatmeal than other oatmeal, or their egg mcmuffin vs any other eggs & toast dish, or their small burgers vs any other sandwich. A sandwich doesn't automatically become healthy because it's made with a 4"-thick ciabatta loaf instead of a hamburger bun and a few sprigs of mixed greens instead of pickles.

their egg mcmuffin
At one time they wanted people do avoid eggs but now they think it is ok to eat them. The main concern is fat.

Atherosclerosis, also known as "hardening of the arteries" or clogged veins, is a common condition that occurs when fat, cholesterol, and other substances build up in the walls of arteries, forming deposits called plaques. These plaques can narrow or block arteries, reducing blood flow and limiting the amount of oxygen that reaches organs and other parts of the body. Over time, atherosclerosis can lead to potentially deadly events, such as heart attack, stroke, and coronary heart disease.
