  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A drag queen-led parody of the Last Supper featured during Friday’s opening ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympics has sparked a wave of incensed reactions and denunciations.

In a statement released Saturday, the French Bishops’ Conference criticized the “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we deeply deplore.”

“We thank the members of other religious denominations who have expressed their solidarity. This morning, we think of all Christians on all continents who have been hurt by the outrage and provocation of certain scenes,” the French bishops said.

One of the best known prelates of the Catholic Church in the United States, Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota, called on Catholics to “make their voices heard” in response to what he called “the gross mockery of the Last Supper.”

In a post on X, Barron said the blasphemous act was emblematic of a “deeply secularist postmodern society” that identifies Christianity as its enemy.

Meanwhile, in reparation for the blasphemy, Bishop Donald Hying of Madison, Wisconsin, immediately called on all Catholics to “fast and pray, renew our devotion to the Eucharist, the Sacred Heart and the Virgin Mary.”

This is the direction the United States and much of the world is moving toward.
I'm not so sure about that. I mean, look at all the backlash that this incident has caused. So long as incidents like this still receive significant backlash, there's still hope for our world.

Woah, Bishop Hying is my Bishop. :) Glad he is speaking out against this demonic stuff. We are officially in the End Times though, and very near the Great Tribulation. This far-left, woke drag queen stuff is of the devil. Yes, some of the far-right stuff is sickening, and anti-Christian also, but this stuff from the far-left is totally anti-Christian.

I found something on the internet that seems to make sense

The image being presented was not the last supper, but rather The Feast of Dionysus, which may be construed as somewhat similar in appearance as the classic artistic image show many people feasting at a table.

The discussion was that the divinci masterpiece is housed in Italy, not in France.

The Feast of a Greek god is due to the Olympics being based upon the Greek culture.

This makes sense.

Dionysus was chosen to represent at the Paris games, because of French culture, which is deeply rooted in feasting, and the performing arts.

Even if the Opening ceremony director meant for this presentation, it still involved inappropriate images.

Children and families were no doubt watching.

I'm glad that Jesus and his followers soon replaced faith in Greek Gods.

However the depictions in the opening ceremony were obscene and depraved, whether the intention was to present Dionysus or not.

Could they not have celebrated feasting without being naked?

Yeah, I have heard of this as well, but still, no excuse. Also, calling this ceremony the Feast of Dionysus might be an excuse by the far-left wing media and Olympic organizers made after the fact to cover up that this was truly a mockery of the Last Supper.

Apparently it was a UMC parish that organized this according to a relative of mine. If that is the case I hope your church sues the UMC for hate speech.

Agreed. I do not live near any UMC churches, though there are a few of them in my city. UMC = Apostate

I'm not sure who chose the Dionysus presentation and chose the choreography and costuming for it, but could it have been the artistic director of opening ceremonies, Thomas Jolly?

Artistic director for Opening Ceremonies is Thomas Jolly:

The official X account for the Olympic Games shared photos of the moment and referenced the Greek god Dionysus, not “The Last Supper.”

“The interpretation of the Greek God Dionysus makes us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings,” read a tweet captioning the photos.

When asked about the backlash July 27, the ceremony’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, said at a press conference he did not intend “to be subversive,” “mock” or “shock.”

But that's exactly what happened. He presented moral depravity and sickness as something to be festive over, and as a part of France's republic-on a world stage.

The intention here seems to be one where he gets the world wide audience to be exposed to filth presented as something to be tolerated.

This seems to me to be a masterful manipulation

Yes, I have some issues with it due to the inappropriate images you mention, but I don't think they were trying to invoke any imagery of the Last Supper.

I have a friend who goes to the UMC and I went once in my quest to find a denomination. I knew they were liberal but this is just freaky. And insulting.

I haven’t been able to confirm UMC involvement.

I respectfully disagree. Even Atheists saw this as a blatant attack on Christianity. If even pagans can see it for what it is, then it must be. Last year Baseball hosted ‘Pride Night’ throughout the league. The Dodgers hosted it with drag queens dressed as nuns being rude to the cross. Catholics peacefully protested it. This is a worldwide attack on our Lord, our Lady (pop singer Madonna did this in Vanity Fair) and on the Church. Our Bishops are right, and the devil is in the details!
