Wonders why image posted with "research letter" underlined...

Checks hidden post. :eyeroll:. Good grief, another person ignorant of prestige in science.

1. Such a paper is a full, but rapidly communicated paper.
2. In most journals, or journal famillies the "letters" journal or section has become the most prestigious. The editors put extra effort into rapidly reviewing and publishing cutting edge and important research in a short format.
3. I don't know this journal, but it is certainly the case that the most prestigious journals are the ones whose names end in letters.

Sigh.

I can't speak to the quality of the specific study, but it is certainly not a *negative* that it is published in the "letters" section.
It's a comment of the same quality as the good old "it's just a theory".

Okay, so, hypothetical time:
Say a 14 year old boy develops an impressive case of gynecomastia, but it turns out that this kid is transgender to boot?
Dad says he’s gotta have the surgery, (Mom is out of the picture), kid don’t want to, it ends up in court.

Who “wins”?
The dad.

He's the parent and makes the medical decision. Not the child.

Yes, 14 years old is still a child.

I would consider that unethical - while a 14-year-old is still a child, they do have some level of bodily autonomy. Forcing them to undergo a medically-unnecessary surgery against their will would violate that principle.

Would you say the same in the inverse situation? What if a doctor diagnosed the 14-year-old as transgender and the parent wanted them to get gender reassignment surgery, but the child didn't want to? Would you say that the parent makes the medical decision then?

From a strictly legal standpoint even, the answer to this question varies by state.

That's fair. I do not consider most "gender affirming" surgeries medically necessary, and don't think anyone under the age of 18 should do transgender treatment because they are still minors and their brains are still developing.
