I saw a discussion between some Jewish people and some Christians about halal food. Everyone from both communities was adamant that they either don't like eating it (but sometimes there are no other choices), or absolutely will not eat it as 'food offered to other gods' and would rather go hungry. I thought it was what came out of a person that made them unclean and that halal isn't an issue. Have I missed something? I've never even heard of this, but it seemed to be really upsetting people who felt that Muslim practices were being adopted without consultation and that it was disrespecting both Jews and Christians.

Well, if you have a Muslim or Jew enter your house, just respect their dietary restrictions, or ask them beforehand to plan out meals. For this discussion, was it online?

Sometimes a foodstuff will be listed as both kosher AND halal. What to do then?

Halal just means it's permitted for Muslims to eat. I mean, for heaven's sake, an apple is halal (permitted). If people want to stop eating fruit because a Muslim can eat it, that's just plain silly.

Halal means "lawful" food - food that is approved. So then all vegetables are considered Halal if nothing is done to taint or poison the vegetables or fruits. The clean meats of Leviticus 11 are also lawful for both Muslims and Jews.

If someone says they don't like eating vegetables, or fruits , or the clean meats of Lev 11 - then fine but other than that...

A lot of Christians who ignore Lev 11 - will also still choose to eat vegetables, fruits, beef, lamb, salmon etc. IE foods that fit in the Halal restrictions.

By contrast haram foods are forbidden for Muslims and in certain cases also forbiden for Jews and some Christians depending on the rule that is being broken.

Well, I think that would be "everyone" who was involved in that discussion. But they do not speak for the millions and maybe billions of Jews and Christians who were not in that discussion!

I have been told that Halal is meat and poultry which is ok for Muslims to eat. And they have people who certify what a supermarket may sell as "Halal". And the sellers must pay a fee for permission to sell a meat or poultry as "Halal", so Muslims will be ok about buying it. It has to meet certain standards of how the animal was killed and prepared, I think.

However, anyone can buy the Halal meat and poultry. But Muslims can feel obligated to buy what their people have said is ok.

Guys, I found this cool chart. Chickens are both Kosher and Halal, same with fruit.

"But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do." (NIV)

Amen, brother. This is the verse we all need, if we become scrupulous.
