  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Criminal Steve Bannon blessed by Catholic priest before prison

Criminal Steve Bannon, who helped plot the attempted insurrection with convicted felon Donald Trump, is blessed by a Catholic priest before beginning his prison sentence. He appears to give a brief Nazi salute with his left hand before the blessing.

Bannon recently gave an interview to the NYT, excerpted below:

President Trump is a peacemaker. He wants to go in and negotiate and figure something out as a deal maker. I think 75 percent of our movement would want an immediate, total shutdown — not one more penny in Ukraine, and massive investigations about where the money went. On the southern border and mass deportations, I don’t think President Trump’s close to where we are. They all got to go home.

Also, on artificial intelligence, we’re virulently anti-A.I. I think big regulations have to come. President Trump is a kindhearted person. He’s a people person, right?

We win, we pick up five or six seats — we have 55 seats in the Senate. We pick up five or six seats in the House, and we have the executive branch. And this time, we have much more savvy and understanding.

What does the Justice Department look like? What kinds of changes would Trump make?

I think they’ll hit it with a blowtorch.

The MAGA movement controls the Republican Party and backs President Trump. So yes, Trump is a revolution — remember, General Washington, the revolution and the foundation, and then Lincoln, the birth of the new America. And he’s the most nationalist guy we’ve ever had. Remember, fighting the Civil War, as a warlord, to make sure that we were a nation. Remember, he’s a nationalist.

I hate to say this, but Trump’s the third. Trump is taking America back to its more constitutional Republic for the third time, and that drives the credentialed left nuts because he’s not just a class traitor, he’s a low-end guy from Queens.

----

Blessings, indeed.

 Sign of the cross before a typical Catholic prayer. *gasp* Not a Nazi salute. Not a blessing.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

More anti Catholic bigotry. No surprise here.

I don't see any anti Catholic bigotry. Maybe you can point it out?

I do see a Catholic priest expressing support for a repeat offender criminal. That seems unfortunate, don't you agree?

Who needs a blessing more than an abject sinner?

Only if you assume being ordained means someone is immune from having political biases?

Society has these conversations every time a new Pope is selected "Can you believe they're for this?" or "Can you believe they're against this?"

At the end of the day, strict adherence to any of the Abrahamic religions leans more to the side of conservatism than it does to progressivism, and being a member of the clergy typically means a stricter adherence than that of the average Joe on the street, so it shouldn't come a huge surprise that a large number of the members of the clergy in those religions would be inclined to support the guy who supports the conservative politician.

Complaining that catholic clergy members have a conservative bias would be like complaining that the leaders of "Mom's Demand Action" have an anti-gun bias...well, yeah...of course they do lol.

Maybe it’s a pastoral support and not support for his actions? I can’t read peoples minds or hearts.

Touche, but was he blessing Bannon's actions?
He can be blessed without approval for his actions.

Essentially, love the sinner, hate the sin ;) applies to ALL.

Why shouldn't he be blessed? Are we so righteous, that we think we should be blessed, but not others?
Amen! Blessings for all ;)

No one is beyond redemption no matter the evil they have done.
I am trying to understand how you took a prayer to an Archangel, (to help us all by doing the (heavenly) job he has been assigned, as “anti-Catholic bigotry”, (especially since the poster is a (fellow) Catholic ).

On the other hand, it is the internet and this wouldn’t be the strangest thing I’ve seen!

Notice how the praying for enemies is being ignored here?

I'm confused.

It wasn't me who posted the prayer?

Essentially, she was asking for St. Michael's protection against, for a lack of a better word, persecution of the faithful....interpret it as you will.

I wasn't accusing Michie of bigotry. Only that I agreed with her.

Oh! Your comment about ”anti-Catholic bigotry” was about the OP!, but used Michie’s post to comment, instead of scrolling to the bottom to make your own comment. (I’ve done the same thing myself, here-and-there), I’m so glad we cleared that up.
