Politics can be measured by differing axis, left and right are not at times appropriate or useful.
Anti-immigration could be argued to be historically a left wing cause, as unions feared foreign workers would reduce wages/conditions whereas capitalists saw it as a means to reduce wages/conditions and break unions. In Australia, the immigration restrictions that was eventually called the "white Australia policy" was insisted on by the Labor (ie socialist) Party as a condition of them supporting our first government.
