Republican National Committee Co-Chairman Michael Whatley said the RNC is prepared for the possibility Donald Trump may deliver his convention remarks from prison, noting the former president's June 11 sentencing will come just days before the convention.

Trump is expected to accept the Republican Party's nomination for the presidency at the Milwaukee convention, which will take place from July 15 to July 18.

During an interview Tuesday, Newsmax host Rob Finnerty pressed Whatley on whether the RNC had contingency plans for Trump's acceptance speech in the event Trump is sentenced to jail time. Following his guilty verdict last week, Judge Juan Merchan has scheduled sentencing for July 11, four days before the convention.

“Let’s say Trump is behind bars. And again, it is a possibility. Would he make a speech from prison?” Finnerty asked. “Would he make a speech before sentencing day? Just something that you could play during the RNC? Are those contingencies being thought about, considered, and planned for?”

“Everything is being thought about. Everything is being considered,” Whatley replied.

The RNC co-chairman expressed his belief that the former president will deliver planned remarks for the convention, even if that means from prison.

“At this point in time, we will have to wait and see kind of what the courts present us with the opportunity to do," he added. "But look, Donald Trump will communicate directly with the American voters the way that he always does.”

I can see pardoned felon Michael Flynn leading the chants of "don't lock him up!"

In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s felony conviction last week for falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment to a porn star, President Biden (46%) now leads his Republican rival (44%) in a two-way race for the White House for the first time since October 2023, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
...
Overall, 52% say Trump’s conviction was a “fair outcome meant to hold him accountable for his own actions”; just 35% who say it was “an unfair outcome meant to damage him politically.” And 49% think Trump was “more of a criminal” in the trial, versus 34% who consider him “more of a victim.”

So far, it seems the conviction is hurting Trump, not helping him, as his followers predicted.

This Trump disaster for the republican party is self-inflicted. Americans suffer from their leaderships' abandoned principles and lack of courage. It's delusional to pretend these felony convictions will somehow propel Donald Trump back into office. If he wins, cheating will have occurred in my opinion. Cheating to "win" is his MO in everything. Now cheating and being convicted of several is seemingly acceptable for this republican coalition if they are planning on a contingency of Donald Trump being incarcerated. I wonder if they will party like it's 1999 at their convention? I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray. :)

Sure they would ramp up security for Trump, the Secret Service already has plans for that. But if Trump goes to jail he should get no special treatment. Perhaps he can call the convention collect if it is the right time for a phone call and the number is one of the fifteen on his list. Note he may only get ten minutes if others are waiting to use the phone. I imagine the dems will create a line of prisoners waiting for phones.

From Telephone Calls

"Incarcerated individuals are only permitted to call persons on their approved telephone list and may only have up to 15 telephone numbers on their approved list at any time. Phone numbers may only be added or deleted at the request of the incarcerated individual. This is generally done on a quarterly basis when they meet with their assigned Offender Rehabilitation Coordinator.

If you do not wish to receive telephone calls from someone in a correctional facility, you need to notify the facility, in writing, and your name will be entered on the incarcerated individual's Negative Correspondence and Telephone List. The incarcerated individual will be immediately notified in writing that you have been removed from their "Telephone List" and that disciplinary action may be taken if the telephone is used in any manner to contact you. In addition, your telephone number will be removed from the telephone system.

According to the type of facility, incarcerated individuals are generally permitted to make phone calls every day, including holidays, between the hours of 7 AM to 11 PM.

A schedule for phone calls will be established. Calls will automatically be terminated when the facility specific time limit has been reached, preceded by a warning. No calls will exceed 30 minutes. When other incarcerated individuals are waiting to place calls, a 10-minute limit may be imposed."

In November 2016, Donald Trump stated that a candidate under federal investigation "has no right to be running" and that it would be "virtually impossible" for a president under indictment to govern.
Trump Once Said a Candidate Under Federal Investigation 'Has No Right to Be Running'?

Just like "Next month, I'll release my income tax returns like every other presidential candidate.' No one believes anything he says, not even his own family.

Yeah - I actually don't think there is anything (as in a law) preventing a president from being president from prison. It's interesting - I wonder why the Constitution didn't say anything about this (if I'm not mistaken).

The only requirements that the Constitution has for the office of President is that a person be of certain age, be a natural-born citizen (which is generally accepted now to mean have citizenship at birth, regardless of where you were born,) and be resident in the US for a certain amount of time. Because they were relying on elder statesmen to elect the President, they didn't feel the need to define things more than that, with the assumption that the EC would weed out anybody unqualified or ill repute.
