VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The reason why the 2024 edition of the Vatican yearbook has re-inserted “Patriarch of the West” as one of the historical titles of the pope appears to be a response to concerns expressed by Orthodox leaders and theologians.

For months after the yearbook, the Annuario Pontificio, was released, the Vatican press office said it had no explanation for the reappearance of the title, which Pope Benedict XVI had dropped in 2006.

But new documents from the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity place the change squarely in the middle of a broad discussion among all mainline Christian churches on the papacy and the potential role of the bishop of Rome in a more united Christian community.

I have been trying to download the full English text since early this morning and I get an error that the site cannot be reached. Maybe later.

I have not had any luck either. But I figured it was my signal given where I live.

Interesting, since Patriarch and Pope both mean father. They're essentially the same title. I know there are theological differences between the east and west, I'm aware, the EO Patriarchs are not "above" each other, they are first among equals.

I get 100 mbps downloads (I rechecked today) and so it's not me. Trying again now.

Still not working. Looks to me like a server crash. Whatever it is, doesn't look like a problem at my end.

I still can’t download it. Has anyone else been able to download the complete text? I tried English, Italian, and French.

Luke Coppen from Pillar says he's having the same issue. It's a Vatican problem.

I tried uploading my local version to archive.org, but it gave me a "400 Bad Data" error. Fortunately it looks like they downloaded it themselves:

Pillar had a long and good summary of it. I'm guessing they had early access to an otherwise embargoed document, so they could be ready to go right away. Then on release day their summary comes out but somehow the document path is messed up. Not a 404 error but a server error, probably a permissions thing. Who knows.

So for now that Pillar article is the best summary I have seen.
