Off-duty security guard fatally shoots Renton teen after mistaking BB gun for real firearm

"(The suspect) believed the group was going to commit armed robbery at the location," noted investigators. Police said the 51-year-old told them he felt that he didn't have enough time to call 911 to prevent the alleged armed robbery, so to protect his son nearby, he said "he had a duty to stop the individuals."

Immediately afterward, police said the suspect told them he exited his vehicle and pointed his security guard-issued gun at the three teenagers, commanding them to drop the firearm and put their hands in the air. At that point, police said the teen who carried the gun complied with the suspect's orders and threw the gun onto the ground. According to court papers, the suspect then grabbed the teenager so the boy would be unable to retrieve the firearm that was on the ground.

As this occurred, police said the suspect believed one of the other teens was grabbing for a gun located in that teen's waistband. It was at that point that police said the suspect fired multiple times. After the initial shots, he stood over the teen on the ground and continued to fire, according to court documents.

That pretty well destroys his testimony. People should not have guns unless they are trained how to use them. Even teens should not have a toy gun unless they are aware it could get them killed. The police have shot teenagers with BB guns. Still toy guns have a red plastic nozzle that is suppose to alert people that it is a toy. If people have to be licensed to drive a car they should have a license to carry a gun. They should be test to show they are competent to handle that weapon. If you go to a gun show there are lots and lots of guns and never an incident. They do not let you in the building of the gun is not properly secured.

I knew a young man who died when he was 21 as a result of car accident due to horrible weather.

Driving isn’t a right. It’s a special privilege.

I know from experience that they can kill a rabbit. And that is a pistol, a bb riffle is apt to be more powerful.

That makes it pretty sure a bb can put out an eye, which can result in death.

A BB gun would need a pretty lucky shot to kill a rabbit. Pellet guns are more common as "varmint" guns (for those who don't want to use a .22). In theory, a bb gun could take out an eye ("You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"), but you'd have to be very (un)lucky or shooting from point blank range to actually hit a target that small. Also, the kid in the OP article had an airsoft gun, which isn't going to do more than leave a welt - airsoft "wars" are a legitimate thing, and the only protection that people wear is long pants/sleeves and a facemask.

Then I'm either Wyatt Earp reborn or beyond lucky as I have several rabbit kills. They are generally not quick, e.g. death from internal damage without ever breaking the skin. Rabbits are rather fragile.

Yes, getting an eye would be extremely lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at is.

Side note. One of my Rugby buddies was shot in the leg with a 22 when out for a run. He thought it was just a bb gun and did not realize he had a bullet in him until he got back home. Unlike the movies it would have caused far more damage to remove it and it was never removed. The lead poisoning bit from lead bullets as shown in the movies is also garbage. It can happen but it takes years if it happens at all.

Fair enough - I'll admit I've never actually shot a rabbit with a BB gun. Was basing it on my experiences using one to scare off groundhogs in my garden. They never seemed to take any real injury.

In general it may be difficult to calculate joules and pellet diameter in
a stressful / quick decision / life and death situation.

I’ve had zero experience with guns, have NO interest in guns, and know absolutely nothing.

I wouldn’t wish ANYONE be in a life or death situation.
