Representatives of the Australian Catholic Medical Association, with the support of several Catholic moral theologians and bioethicists, have criticized a book published by the Pontifical Academy for Life for its lack of understanding of “current science” and specific areas of medicine.

The experts argue that the book spreads “misleading and confusing” theological and medical information that contradicts established Church teachings on contraception and assisted reproductive technologies.

The book in question, “Etica Teologica Della Vita” (ETV), covers “Theological Ethics of Life: Scripture, Tradition, and Practical Challenges.” The 528-page Italian publication is a synthesis of a seminar sponsored by the academy in 2021.

The critique, published April 23 in the Linacre Quarterly, the official journal of the Catholic Medical Association, describes contradictions between the book and established Church teachings on contraception and assisted reproductive technologies.

The Academy for Life used to be a sound and positive thing before it got wrecked. Glad there are still folks who will speak clearly for life even though the Pontifical Academy for Life got lost.

Man, Australian Catholics in general might want to read these scriptures highlighted. The Bible talks about being pro-life, on multiple occasions. (secondly, the Aussies need to break their obsession with burning coal).

I think it's the Pontifical Academy for Life folks that need to read their Bibles, or buy them and then read them. You expect Pontifical Academies to be right on, but this one has a 'different' direction after being 'renewed' by Team Francis.

Agreed. Something is going on with the Catholic Church, and churches in general. The world is getting to them.

I don't know why Australian Catholics in general might want to read the highlighted scriptures. It might have been Australian Catholic doctors who responded, but the issues concern all Catholics. I'm still not impressed by the church's ban on contraceptives. I can't see one iota of difference in intention between NFP and artificial contraception as far as birth control goes.

If they're going to quote church fathers, the church fathers weren't faced with a world of 8 billion people and still rising rapidly.

If population growth is slowing down, it's not because the majority are using NFP. They're using contraceptives and all too frequently abortion which I agree is immoral.

As for coal "burning" we're tenth on the list.

The US burns five times as much as we do, and China about 33 times the amount.

We export a lot of coal.

We are making moves towards a gradual lessening of fossil fuel with renewable energy producing 32% of our power in 2022. There are now about 180,000 EV's in Australia. We recently bought a hybrid ourselves although it still burns fuel (about a third of the amount the old banger I traded in to buy it), and we have some solar power.

There's a lot of investment in hydrogen.

We don't have nuclear power (other than a small power plant in Sydney producing mainly medical isotopes), although one of the main candidates for the next federal election is spruiking nuclear power as part of his platform.

The smallest state Tasmania is almost completely reliant on hydro power, but it is the only one where that is a significant percentage. Australia is the driest continent (after Antarctica) and water is in short supply generally.

If you want to argue the toss you'll need to tell the Chinese what to do but I doubt if they will listen. They think years in advance.

It is good that Australia is going green. :) Also, hybrids are the best in my opinion, so we agree there. Contraceptives are okay in my opinion, but not abortions, as I am against abortion unless mother and child are at risk of dying. That reactor sounds interesting also, as science has been my interest for almost 15 years. Also, I remember the day we hit 8 billion, in November 2022. Crazy times we live in, brother (or mate, as one says in Aussieland).

OPAL, if I am not mistaken: OPAL | Opal multi-purpose reactor | ANSTO

But yes, China and the US have got to stop burning coal. I will pray for world leaders to keep up high moral standards, as we all should pray for these people.

The OPAL plant sounds like an upgraded version of the original nuclear power plant in Lucas Heights. It was opened way back in1958.

I don't think the US & USA trusted us with more potent plants which could produce weaponry.
