How many churches have discipleship programs and what do they entail?

I'm doing a little study on discipleship programs in churches. I'd like to know as much as possible. If a church has them, how often do they meet, what's its purpose and its goals? I'd like to learn how different churches tackle this issue of discpleship training, or more in general, different "ideas" of what an ideal church looks like.

I think the main view point of the body/church/fellowship I’m part of centres around “Oneanothering” being accountable for one another.
Maybe one to one with a new Christian, being a friend & listening.
Two ears one mouth comes to mind.

Hello @Holy Universe, the discipleship program that I was part of years ago was the "2:7 Series" by the Navigators. My denomination is the Evangelical Free Church of America, and the large local church that I belonged to back then got their leadership almost exclusively from two sources, seminaries and the Navigators 2:7.

Most of our congregants were involved in weekly Bible studies (for learning and fellowship), but our discipleship training was very different (though we usually met just once a week, like our small group Bible studies did). The difference was what we were being taught, what was expected of us (in class), the amount of preparation (homework) that we were required to complete, and other requirements, like Scripture memorization.

The leader of the discipleship program is always trained by the Navigators themselves to lead the group, and many who joined my group did not make it all the way to the end (although back then there were 6 workbooks instead of the three that I see they use now, and it took up to 2 years to complete, instead of the 9 months that it does today).

It's intense, and to be honest, it feels a bit legalistic at first, but nothing that I've experienced of Bible studies, before or after the 2:7 Series, has ended up being such an INCREDIBLE blessing to me and to others in so many ways, not even close!

The church that I'm in now has discipleship programs running for some of our high schoolers, and also for college age members and beyond who we, again, are hoping will eventually move into leadership roles in our church (elders, deacons, and our other ministries) or elsewhere, perhaps as pastors or missionaries.

I hope that helps!

God bless you!!

p.s. - the "2:7" comes from Colossians 2:7, just FYI.

Thank great to have such insight from you.
Hi Nalex1066, if you meant the above for me, you're welcome :) I wish I knew more about it (the typical ways that churches handle their discipleship programs, that is), but I only have my own, personal experiences to go by in this case.

Here are a few more resource links from the Navigators, for anyone who'd care to look into them a bit further (they are a US based, worldwide missions and discipleship organization, just FYI).

The newest 2:7 Discipleship Series must not contain the entire Topical Memory System, but here is a link to it (in case anyone is interested).

The Navigators have been using their Topical Memory System as part of the training for all of their missionaries (domestic and overseas) for about 90 years now (and there has been almost no change in it since they first created it). So, if you are interested in memorizing Scripture, the Topical Memory System has proven to be a GREAT way to do so.

In the old days, we just had business card-sized flash cards to help us with the memory work, but they final released the Topical Memory System as both Apple and Android apps, which you can get for only a few $$ at your app store.

As much as I LOVED my flash cards (and still do :)), the TMS apps are the undoubted way to go, now that they are finally available.

God bless you!!

Just a side note:
I read a small article that said that if we preached the Gospel in its fullness and we didn't downplay God's justice, or wrath, our depraved sin, or hell, then we would have less need for discipleship. Discipleship will still be needed but it will be a lot less. Often discipleship will entail helping someone through addictions or sins that sometimes a believer may want to hold onto. But if a person is told the full truth right from the start, then they will run away from sin and want to honour God. They will have a drive to be righteous and also to spread His word.
Proverbs 16:6 By the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
