This is interesting. GPS errors on the Finland Russia border.

Finland reports GPS disturbances in aircraft flying over Russia’s Kaliningrad

I wonder whether Russia is looking at jamming GPS in revenge for sanctions?

GPS systems rely upon receiving signals from 3, or 4 different satallites, each satallite contains an atomic clock and each it transmitting a time signal. The GPS receiver measures the time difference between each satallite (each signal travels at the speed of light), so the relative time delays will enable the GPS receiver to work out the position.

Three satallites will only enable the position at sea level to be determined, but four will enable the altitude to be determined as well. I'm not sure how jamming this system makes much sense, given that long range missiles and aircraft are also using inertial guidance systems as well and that jamming a signal coming from a satallite presets some quite serious technical difficulties.

This may be a problem caused by something else, other than jamming. It does seem a bit strange though!

Well we know that there is even commercial tech to scramble GPS in an area, but those are very limited range and mainly use in to hide your exact location. This is way wider area. It's possible that the Russians are testing systems there now, just to see that they are working. It's a bit similar in thought to our mobile radar systems. We turn them on from time to time to make sure everything is working fine, but don't keep them on all the time because then were just screaming out their current locations to the world.

There is an up link connection to these satellites to make small adjustments to the time code signal to correct for any variability in the satellites actual orbits as each orbit can be slightly different. Hacking into this is unlikely to be very easy to do, as I expect this to be a interleaved multi layer encoded signal. The technical problems breaking into such transmssions are quite considerable.

Finland is asking for trouble if they keep messing with the GPS. Russia needs to ensure the security of GPS in that area. Perhaps they should send a peace mission to Finland to ensure security.

They did. Unfortunately, due to problems with the GPS, they found themselves at the North Pole. Santa wasn't pleased by the unannounced visit.

I didn't know Finland had Jewish Space Lasers but it explains where all the vowels went from Hebrew.

Not directly related, but see also

Maybe it is directly related. A link in the article goes to this one:

Russia May Be Testing Its GPS Spoofing Capabilities Around The Black Sea

A consensus is building that Russia has been experimenting with the ability to override Global Positioning System signals with fake ones that can severely disrupt and confuse the geolocation abilities of GPS users. For now this phenomenon has mainly affected ships traversing the Black Sea, but during a time of conflict it could impact a wide spectrum of combat systems including drones, missiles, smart bombs, as well as surface combatants and land warfare units. Even manned aircraft may not be immune to such electronic warfare tactics.

Vowels are so Hawaiian.

Wait until they find out that GPS isn't real because the earth is flat.

Wait until they find out that Finland isn't real and is just a conspiracy perpetuated by Russia and Japan because of fishing rights.

So, is this going to affect the rest of us when we are driving around in our cars and expecting the GPS to tell us directions for our journey's. I like my GPS, when I am traveling. I tells me where I am likely to be able to pop into a petrol station, or stop somewhere for a bite to eat.

You're probably safe as long as you don't live anywhere that Putin wants to own.

Uh oh.

It's Russia, to go with the threats to shoot down civilian airliners in Europe.

Apart from some GPS jamming and egomaniac threats, what else could Moscow do? Send a school bus column on the border? "If you don't bow to Putin, we will send this over the border to clog your roads and your farmers will be too busy towing our army away to do their spring sowing"?
