Mark Robinson is favored to win the Republican nomination for governor in a battleground state, even as some see serious liabilities for November.

Surrounded by fans at a beach town bar, Mark Robinson addressed his absent critics. “Mark Robinson is not running to be governor to be a bully over anybody,” he said.

Left unmentioned: The deluge of offensive comments that made such a declaration necessary. There was the time he called school shooting survivors “media prosti-tots” for advocating for gun-control policies. The meme mocking a Harvey Weinstein accuser, and the other mememocking actresses for wearing “harlot dresses to protest sexual harassment.” The prediction that rising acceptance of homosexuality would lead to pedophilia and “the END of civilization as we know it”; the talk of arresting transgender people for their bathroom choice; the use of antisemitic tropes; the Facebook posts calling Hillary Clinton a “heifer” and Michelle Obama a man.

“He is history’s latest example of someone trying to rise to power through hate,” said Dale Folwell, the Republican state treasurer, who is waging a long-shot campaign against Robinson.

Plenty of other Republican officials are uneasy about the prospect of Robinson leading the ticket.

“Listening to Republicans on and off Jones Street” — the hub of state government in Raleigh — there’s a sense that “while he may be the voice of the party, he’s not the voice of North Carolina,” said Jonathan Bridges, who managed former GOP congressman Mark Walker’s now-shuttered campaign for governor.

Supporters shrug off the reporting on Robinson’s most outrageous comments as smear jobs and “fake news.” When asked about one of Robinson’s most-scrutinized Facebook posts — a 2018 screed against the film “Black Panther” that references Israeli currency and uses a Yiddish slur for Black people — Ed Broyhill, a Republican national committeeman from North Carolina, said, “I can’t help but think that that’s been manufactured by some opposition.”

From your lips to God's ears.

I think it does show some of the weakness of the modern GOP as a national party. Trump and Trump-like does now solidly control a majority of the GOP.

But as you said: to win, they need to get a majority of the entire electorate.

There was an interesting article in theHill today. Guy noted that ordinarily, 270 electoral votes are needed to win - but what if because of a 3-way split, no one got the 270?

Hitler-quoting candidate wins North Carolina Republican gubernatorial primary

Mark Robinson, who has history of making inflammatory comments, will face Democrat Josh Stein, in what’s expected to be a close race in November

Robinson said last month that he would “absolutely” protect life from conception. “We got it down to 12 weeks,” he said. “The next goal is to get it down to six, and then just keep moving from there.”

At a rally last weekend endorsing Robinson, Trump praised Robinson’s rhetorical skills and called him “Martin Luther King on steroids”.

Then the election goes to the House of Representatives and we probably wouldn't have a President for months. We might get to see more naked pictures of Hunter Biden, though.

It's like they no longer care about anything but scaring and angering people enough to hate. Where are the real republicans?

GOP pick for N.C. governor downplayed Weinstein allegations, assault by Ray Rice

Mark Robinson has spent years repeatedly questioning the veracity of women who accuse prominent men of violence.

[He] wrote repeatedly of a 2014 domestic violence encounterinvolving then-NFL star Ray Rice, who was seen on a surveillance videodragging his apparently unconscious fiancée out of an elevator. In a post directed at Rice’s “lady friend,” Robinson suggested the woman was at fault for the physical altercation.

“I’m a 350lb man but aint no way in [HECK} I’m gonna’ slap no pro football player,” Robinson wrote on Facebook. “I’m to old for [a butt-]whoopin’.”

Robinson’s post declaring he would not slap Rice came in the days after the NFL suspended Rice, who was charged with aggravated assault in March 2014, for the first two games of the following season.

Trump and other Republicans have embraced his rhetorical style. Trump endorsed Robinson during his primary for governor, calling him “Martin Luther King on steroids.”

Along with online commentary making light of domestic violence, over the past decade Robinson has joked about and cast doubt on several women who accused prominent men of sexual misconduct. He had some repeated targets, including the women who accused Cosby, Weinstein and Kavanaugh of sexual assault.

Robinson referred to abortion as "murder" and "genocide" on his Facebook page in 2018, later saying in a 2019 Facebook live stream that if he had a “willing” state Legislature, he would sign a law banning abortion “for any reason.”

“Abortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers, it is about killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down," Robinson claimed.

--

The North Carolina Republican has come out with a new campaign advertisement in his bid for governor in which he and his wife opened up about their decision to have an abortion decades ago. The commercial comes shortly after Robinson's recent promise at a campaign rally to completely ban the care in the state.

"Thirty years ago, my wife and I made a very difficult decision. We had an abortion," Robinson says in the ad.

[He appears to be making a case for a ban with exceptions, but this is an unusual way of going about it, since he doesn't say anything about the situation with his wife that would justify any exception, [apart from the usual one, i.e. "the only moral abortion...".]]

Fortunately, it looks like the voters are mostly not buying his particular brand of crazy.

A new High Point University/SurveyUSA Poll shows Attorney General Josh Stein, the Democratic nominee for governor, leading Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson by 14 percentage points in North Carolina’s closely watched governor’s race.

While Harris’ entry into the presidential race has helped bring new excitement to the Democratic ticket — the poll found that she has now pulled slightly ahead of former President Donald Trump among North Carolina voters 46%-45% — Robinson has faced questions in recent weeks about a nonprofit led by his wife that was cited for inaccurate reimbursement claims.

With the new school year starting, Lt. Gov. Robinson has also faced questions about remarks made during a July event that he would opt the state out of [$1.6 billion with a b in] federal education funds in an effort to reduce bureaucracy.
