The shooter at pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church was a woman between 30 and 35 years of age who was armed with a long gun and accompanied by a child, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner told reporters at a Sunday news conference.

“She is deceased here on the scene,” Finner said.

Two off-duty police officers engaged the shooter and struck her.

“Unfortunately, the 5 year-old kid was hit and is in critical condition at a local hospital,” Finner said. “There was a 57-year-old man who didn’t have anything to do with it, I don’t think, who was shot in the leg. He’s seeking treatment in the hospital.”

I don't know that the identity of the woman has been released yet, nor have I see any articles mentioning a motive of any kind.

The articles I'm seeing mention that two off-duty LEOs were the ones who engaged her.

Not sure if it was a case where they were doing "security work side gigs" (as some officers will do on weekends), or if they were actual members of the church who happened to be there (which is also quite plausible for a church of that size to have a least a few off-duty police officers in attendance)

From what I read in an article over here, I understood that the officers were working there as security at the time.

The shooter used an AR-15 that had “Free Palestine” written on it [ETA: per law enforcement, it said only "Palestine"] according to a federal law enforcement source. Investigators are trying to sort out whether she was politically motivated or a disturbed individual, the source said.

CNN article updated:

On Sunday night, authorities searched a home in Conroe, Texas, in connection with the shooting, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed Monday. Spokesperson Melissa Garcia told CNN the ATF-Houston Division was one of the law enforcement agencies involved in the search, but provided no additional details on what they were searching for. The home is about 50 minutes north of Lakewood Church.

Detectives believe as many as 12 shots were fired, and investigators are actively reviewing a history of arrests they believe the suspect has on her record.

Overnight, agents with the FBI, Texas Rangers, and ATF raided a Conroe home believed to be connected to the suspect. Video from the scene shows a large law enforcement presence.
