  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

David Mills: Decent people tip, and well. Bad people don’t.

The story pops up now and again on social media as a subject for the ten-minute-hate, and a justifiable one too. Someone stiffs a waiter or a bartender and tries to excuse themselves for doing it.

Someone signs the credit card receipt at the restaurant and puts a zero in the space for a tip, writing in “I give my money to charity” or “I save my money for Jesus” (those of you with Bibles, see Matthew 25:31-46). Or they give a supposedly principled reason, like “I don’t believe in tipping” or “Your boss should pay you better” or “Tipping lets businesses exploit their workers.”

Or worse, the very worst, the lowest of the low, they scrawl some sneer like “Get a better job.”

The deal you agree to

I get criticism for my tipping sometimes because I tip people who others think shouldn't be tipped because "they didn't do anything"... I dunno what the protocol is so I guess I'm kind of a sucker.

Me too. I tip regardless unless the service is just horrendous.

It's kinda funny to tip really bad staff miniscule amounts. Like 8 cents. It's like a half star rating heh

Just my two cents from personal experience with working for tips

I made less than the minimum wage, but got tips

My tips were so outrageous I could hardly believe it

Every night I worked, I got at least 5 times the amount of the wage I was paid hourly

I think it's pretty much an American thing these days.

I believe Australians have a reputation as poor tippers when they visit the US, but that's because we don't usually tip at home. Hospitality staff are better paid and often have unions behind them.
