Luke 16:

24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
His whole body is in agony, yet he wants his tongue to be cooled. What's the point here?

Barnes explained:

Cool my tongue - The effect of great "heat" on the body is to produce almost insupportable thirst. Those who travel in burning deserts thus suffer inexpressibly when they are deprived of water. So "pain" of any kind produces thirst, and particularly if connected with fever. The sufferings of the rich man are, therefore, represented as producing burning "thirst," so much that even a drop of water would be refreshing to his tongue.

Luke 16:

His whole body is in agony, yet he wants his tongue to be cooled. What's the point here?

Barnes explained:
There is a bit of a problem there. Because both Lazarus and the rich man are both spirits, the rich man doesn't have a tongue that needs cooling, and Lazarus doesn't have hands or water. The Scripture doesn't say that his body is in agony, because his body is still in the grave awaiting the second resurrection leading to the Judgment. The Scripture says, "I am in agony".

.... and the dead know nothing, no praise, no knowledge, no talking ....
re Scripture.
That was from Solomon's perspective. The revelation that departed spirits go to either hell or paradise was not yet revealed. The first indication that there was a paradise was when Jesus told the penitent criminal that he would be with Him in paradise. We see in Revelation that departed spirits do speak, because the spirits under the altar were asking, "How long?" as they were waiting for end when they would be reunited with glorified bodies. We also see on the Mount of Transfiguration that Jesus met with Moses and Elijah. Moses and Elijah appeared in their spirit form to talk with Jesus. Their bodies were not resurrected for that meeting.

When we pass on from this world, our knowledge, speech, and praise to God will go with us. Although our brain will remain in the grave, our mind and memories, which is part of our spirit will go to Paradise (or hell depending on one's attitude to Christ). The difference is that sin, because it is part of our physical bodies, will be left behind in the grave.

Thanks for sharing.

So how you you interpret "cool my tongue"?
Maybe he thought he had one that needed cooling. It's like someone whose leg has been amputated and yet feels pain in it.

So the pain was all in his head. Wait ... Did he have a head?
