This really isn't surprising, frankly. If it weren't for the spread of false information, what would Republicans have to talk about?

-- A2SG, though, I personally would rather see robust fact checking to limiting speech......

I'm with the Dems on this one but who determines what is false? I prefer AI but we are not there yet.

Yes, false information should be restricted. That's only common sense. All people should want that.
I agree. People's lives have been ruined by lies told about them. Case in point...the Georgia election workers whose lives were upended by falsehoods told on them.

Speech is already limited. You can't yell fire in a crowded cinema unless there is a fire. You can't slander someone. You can't put a contract in front of someone and lie about the contents to have them sign their house away.

You're just mad that they are coming for the lies that benefit you.

Let me start by saying that some of the above responses are a vivid illustration as to why we need Civics to be taught in schools again, and need to educate kids on their Constitutional rights, and the purpose and framework of our government. I am Gen X, and when I was young, there was not question regarding freedom of speech, and the idea that government should restrict it was rejected by liberals and conservatives alike.

If I had a dollar for every time a leftist pulled out the "speech is already limited, so I can limit your speech" argument ...

Did you even look at the chart above? It has nothing to do with direct threats or regulated, commercial speech (advertising for instance), It is about "disinformation", and who gets to decide what "disinformation" is?

Political and ideological speech is protected. Hate speech is protected (yes it is). Criticizing the government, questioning narratives, --all of it is protected.

There is absolutely no exemption for "disinformation" anywhere in the First Amendment, and the fact that 70% of young Democrats think there is, is shocking and scandalous

Thanks for proving his point.
he was saying he supports free speech, but we should have rigorous fact-checking by government authorities in order to determine what speech would be permitted

maybe even you can figure out the logic there--it isn't supportive of free expression

You actually trust government authorities; they lie the most.
I do NOT trust government authorities lol

that was the purpose of my post --the fact that a good number of Americans think free speech should be suppressed by the government is pretty shocking. Here is the Pew Research poll

there is no exemption for "false information" in the First Amendment. If Americans think the authorities should be able to censor or arrest people that say things the government disagrees with, that is a huge problem.
