I don’t know what to say about this matter except that the original calendar date observing Nativity “Christmas” is the original, general Orthodox tradition. It is observed by Russia as it is in the Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian, Georgian etc. Orthodox Churches. It is not a “Russian” tradition.

Even in the very early American colonies the same date existed for Christmas observances since Britain was still on the Julian calendar.

Agreed. Political in nature. PLUS it waters down a Christmas that was essentially religious in nature rather than one of consumerism
I personally am ok with the western observance and respect the old observance also. A more important aspect of Orthodox tradition, I believe, that has been lost in most places is that Christmas was celebrated more after observing the birth of the Christ. Over the years, I saw friends still observing old world ways in Orthodox, Catholic, & Protestant (mainly Lutheran) traditions in attending Christmas Eve worship, a late Christmas Eve meal & gifts opened prior to dawn on Christmas Day.

The irony is that the christianisation of Russia came via Kiev, so the Ukranians are actually abandoning their own tradition.

Sad, it seems like overkill as a consequence from the war. The Lord, I believe, came to proclaim peace on earth, goodwill towards men” ( Luke 2:13-14). One of the first reactions of the world ( Romans 3:23) was to murder innocent lives ( Matthew 2:16-18). I sometimes think, in His humanity, the Lord was mentally exhausted & exasperated when He said He was bringing a sword etc. ( Matthew 10:34, Luke 12:51) because this must be our way ( John 16:33).

Ukraine has always used the ol' use one credit card to pay off the other system. Perhaps this is just an attempt to appease in order to find fresh resources to pay off outstanding debts. Must think Western you know so cutting ties with the East is a ploy.

Some of the very early American colonies like Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth didn't observe Christmas at all.
