A white racist got 8 years in prison just for hurling insults at a black man. If the races were reversed , there would be no jail time whatsoever. I don't condone what this guy did, but 8 years ?????!!!!

So if someone feels intimidated, they could send someone to prison even though there was nothing physical ?

There is an old saying I learned as a kid,

"sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me".

This guy should have gotten a fine and a month in jail,, that's it, not 8 years smh.

That saying is nonsense. Words lead to violence often enough. They are a prelude to violence in human behaviour.

There were physical threats. It was second degree bias intimidation. Five to ten. Time served he'll be out in 18 months. If he's a good boy.

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing the "possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute" probably accounts for most of the prison sentence.

The article also makes mention of this being a pattern of behavior, with him leaving threatening notes on the neighbors cars, and the police having to be called there for prior incidents.

Nobody's getting 8 years in prison for racial slurs alone...

States still issue public demonstration permits out for Klan rallies...

Just a wild guess, but I'm betting some racial slurs were used during this April demonstration, and that none of them got multi-year prison sentences for using them.

This, in some ways, resembles some of those cases (that are presented in a way that leaves out all context) where people are portrayed to be the "victim", when in fact what they were doing went well beyond the things being described.

For instance, when there were the stories about "Pastor arrested for preaching the gospel on public sidewalk", the part that gets left out is that he was getting two inches away from peoples' faces with a megaphone and ranting about "sodomites", and basically setting a pick to make people have to go in the street to walk around him.

Or like that story about "Student suspended for praying" from a year or two ago, the part that got left out was "student stood up in the middle of class was loudly praying specifically for the purposes of interrupting and talking over the teacher when they were trying to teach about evolution, and refused to desist after being politely asked 3 times"

Once this incident went viral, a mob of people went to this guy's house . I bet he felt "intimidated" seeing that mob outside his house.

Shouldn't that mob of people gotten at least a few years in the slammer for being "intimidating" ???

This was all about satisfying that mob. All political.

I'm pretty sure most people who have possession of hard drugs with intent to distribute get pretty stiff sentences.

So if I had "distribution-level" amounts of crack cocaine in my possession and called someone a bad name and got prison time, your immediate conclusion would be that it must be a political hitjob due to the bad name?

How quickly we went from 'I think the sentence was excessive' to 'It was about satisfying that mob.' As if the judge was there at the time and thought 'Well, I better keep that particular mob happy.' Don't be silly.

And it's political? My friend, we didn't have to go past the second sentence in your op to see it was political.

Man, I think tthat was some young journalist trying to get followers or something by twisting a drug bust into a racial incident.

It didn't sound right to me in the beginning when I didn't know about the drugs yet. I thought what happened? A black guy pressed charges against someone who slurred them? That don't sound right. Scroll on to see about the drugs and the journalist game becomes apparent.

What is this country coming to when an out-of-control man cannot verbally intimidate his neighbors (and possess illegal substances)?

Then there is this little part.

Mathews was captured on footage referring to the neighbor as a “monkey” and a “n—-r” while bumping his chest and spitting on the man during the altercation.

That qualifies as assault. If you check the standards for any of the Football codes (American Football, Soccer, Rugby Union, Rugby League ...) you will find that throwing a punch will get you less than spitting on someone, and for good reason.

Reading through the following article, my one question was why wasn't he locked up earlier?

I never seem him spit. Even if he did, it's not like he took a baseball bat to his head .

Where is the prison time for all these BLM rioters during the summer of 2020 ???

8 years in prison for name calling. Sad

That was insulting. Shouldn't you go to prison for hurting my feelings ????

Huh. I always heard it as "words can never hurt me." At any rate, it's a worthless saying. Words have ruined us as a society. Thank you, internet. Words used badly are harmful enough when communicated to just a few, but anyone can say anything now, and that might be believed by multitudes. 21st century schizoids just aren't ready for the responsibility of words, apparently.

You hurt my feelings. I feel intimidated. You deserve to go to jail according to your own reasoning. Some magic mushrooms is a fine with maybe some probation. That's it. Not 8 years .

Words, not names, your right. I never invented that saying, but obviously it's popular for a reason
