  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Was the Mercy Seat ever cleaned?

Heard a story of the great extension device with attached cleaning scrub brushes and cloths used to clean that part by the regular priests.. After Yom Kippur, the priests would clean the Most Holy with this extension device so that they didn't enter into that part of the temple. ...

but unable to confirm.

I posted this in Church History, but it got NO responses. I am very curious to the answer. I am re-posting it here.

During the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would place the blood of the sacrifice on top of the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies.

Actually, the blood was sprinkled on the front of the Atonement Cover (Mercy Seat) only with the High Priest's finger, and only once each for the bull's blood and the sin goat's blood.

That would amount to only a few drops each year, which would decay and fall off.

Too bad you couldn't find the source for this.

But even if the amount of blood was minimal, there still would be other reasons to clean the Mercy Seat. One thing that comes to mind is dust. Surely without regular cleaning just the dust alone would pile up.

they sacrificed day and night pouring all of the animals blood on the floor, idk how you visualize it... but yeah.
If by Temple, you mean courtyard, yes the blood of the sin sacrifice was poured out at the base of the altar, not all over the courtyard.

They did not sacrifice 24 hours a day, the fire burned on the altar 24 hours a day.

So, just adding this piece of information, we read somewhere in the bible someone touched the tabernacle and died instantly. The Talmud described an miraculious event during Yom Kippir, day of atonement that a red scarlet would turn white, this signifies that sins has been forgiven, but it ended when Jesus died at 30AD, second temple was destroyed at 70AD. But at second temple there was not ark of the convenant, it got lost during destruction of first Temple. So maybe supernaturally the blood on the Mercy seat would kinda evaporate.

It was the Ark of the covenant he touched, not the tabernacle (Tent of Meeting) which housed the Ark (2 Sa 6:1-7).
And according to God's command, only the Levites could touch the holy things, which Uzzah was not.
The Talmud described an miraculious event during Yom Kippir, day of atonement that a red scarlet would turn white, this signifies that sins has been forgiven,
The Talmud is not Scripture.

The Ark was the Mercy Seat. If it were lost (and it was), there would be no blood sprinkled thereon to evaporate.

Regarding Beit HaMikdash, the whole place was covered with aqueducts and water channels from the surrounding rivers/lakes. These would lead the blood (and other remains) outside.

For example, the Mishna in Yoma 5, 6 talks about the blood flowing away and outside into the Kidron river, and even sold to farmers as fertilizer.

Similarly, the Malbim on Vayikra 16, 14 explains the passuk that says "והזה באצבעו על-פני הכפרת", in which it may seem that sprinkling is actually on the כפרת. Mainly:

There's also a book by Menasheh Harel, with a whole section discussing "המים לטהרה, להיגיינה ולפולחן בבית המקדש בירושלים" (the water for purification, hygiene and worship in Beit HaMikdash in Jerusalem), in which he discusses this as well.
