I read his book: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas when I was young. It was wretched, destructive, drugged out and awful. I also read: Fear & Loathing on the Campaign Trail another drug induced account with the same crummy caricatures that appear in the Fear & Loathing scribble. It seems like he tried to cozy up to Sonny Barger & the Hell’s Angels but they would have no part of him. Barger also seems to have been a dangerous guy but that probably would have been ok with leftists if it served their interests.

Yeah, he's responsible for the term "gonzo journalism"; gonzo meaning erratic, crazy bad writing. And the Hell's Angels beat the snot out of him even while he was trying to write sympathetically about them. That's a very bad literary review.

I remember Ted Koppel had a great anecdote about Kissinger, his zipper and King Fahd. It was all the more entertaining because of his spot on imitation.

It’s a weird industry.
I think it’s super fun, but to the right people in the right frame of mind. I’ve seen it elevate people who had no money, no education, nothing going for them but a solid work ethic and economy of movement and great mental organization to lives that they likely wouldn’t have had. People with records get their second chances, people with ambition who aren’t great leaders but excellent followers, minorities, “old people,” other societal discards, and they parlay it to a foothold to something sustainable and lucrative. I’ve seen people with everything going for them absolutely fail.
Ultimately I think it’s an industry that attracts a segment of society viewed as the dregs, but interestingly it’s one of the few where that segment can (and often is) successful. I’m more on the baking side, which is its own stand-apart section of that culinary world, but I just finished a turn on the kitchen side and I have a new role which will take me closer to multiple kitchens. It’s a wild and fun world, but I agree, only for those who read Kitchen Confidential and say “now that sounds like fun.”

Do you know who helped and is helping Cambodia and Laos rebuild? China. So much for the domino theory. Bomb the living daylights out of a country, kill hundreds of thousands of their citizens and see what happens. Here's another spoiler alert. You don't win hearts and minds.
