  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That is pretty cool. :) Exoplanets are so cool, as I learned about them back in 2010 during the summer before 5th grade by reading the Astronomy periodical. Gliese 581c was my favorite exoplanet as a kid. Nowadays, periodicals are filled with too many ads. :(

Finally, images of exoplanets by a sun-like star are here. Man, we could make some cool sci-fi plots about humans visiting exoplanets in the year A.D 2500 or something.

I hope we can both find a way, and find one that we can colonize one day.

God Bless.
Is one of me deepest hopes that humanity eventually will directly explore the cosmos.

Same here. But I can barely trust humanity with protecting our climate. Imagine if humans trash Mars or something. I'd trust grey aliens, if they exist to explore their own planetary system and our universe over humans at this point. ;)

Extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence. I don't believe this is what they say it is. I could be convinced it is, but until then... BTW, If one of the gas giants is 14 times the mass of Jupiter, that suggests that eventually this will be a binary star.

Or, the largest gas giant could be a brown dwarf. But I do believe these are exoplanets.

I would need to know what technology allowed them to get such a clear picture from such a great distance to believe this picture is of what they claim it is. I'm not buying it - yet - especially from an earth bound telescope.

The technology is explained at the end of the article. Basically, telescopes from around the globe have been strapped together to form an Earth size telescope.

Dlamberth explained it well. Linking telescopes together.

Let's put this image in perspective.
The image does not reveal the star and planets as disks.
The disk like appearance is due to overexposure on the detector.
VLT has been able to resolve the system into separate components which smaller aperture telescope would not be able to accomplish.

Only a handful of stars have been resolved where they are not point like sources.

That is amazingly fantastic.

Incredible.
The first part of this post will be pedantic and a bit disingenuous, but the second part will be ingenuous. You say the image is "fantastic" which means the stuff of fantasy, and "incredible" which means not to be believed. You're both saying you don't believe the image is real.

I suspect what you're actually saying is that the image is "very cool". My sincere question is why is this image cool? A single cell of a blade of grass here on Earth is infinitely much cooler.
I hope we can both find a way, and find one that we can colonize one day.

God Bless.
Really? We're currently having to fight a war against the Muslim colonizers of Palestine, and you want to do more colonizing? Probably a bad idea.

Regarding your last comment, my wife just read to me what William Shatner said after disembarking from the spacecraft that took him to space. In an interesting way, it's quite inspiring and share's my perspective as it has changed over the decades (he's just a little older than me).

“Oh my God. it’s indescribable, To see the blue color [of the atmosphere] shoot by like that. Down there is mother, comfort - and up there is death. Is that what death is? It is so moving. I never expected it. There’s beauty of the blue. It’s so thin. You’re going close to 2,000 mph, and through like 50 miles of it in an instant. And then you’re into black. It’s mysterious, and you know there are galaxies and such up there, but all you see is that black. And down below is light. [Jeff], what you’ve given me is the most profound experience I can imagine. I’m so filled with emotion. It’s extraordinary. I hope I never recover from this, maintain what I feel now. It’s so much larger than me. It has to do with enormity, the quickness of life and death. Oh my God! It’s beautiful in its own way. What I would love to do is communicate this as much as possible. The jeopardy, the moment you feel that vulnerability. This air which is keeping us alive is thinner than your skin. It’s a sliver, immeasurably small when you think in terms of the universe. Mars doesn’t really have it. There is life, and then there’s death."

Earth is a special place. Sure, there may be quadrillions of other planets that God created other imagers on, but as far as we're concerned, this is it.

I'm not saying that at all. Words have multiple meanings and sometimes the intent is the opposite of the denotation of a word. That's how language works. You're free to not think this is "very cool" or mundane or whatever, but you're wasting your time commenting here so there must be something to it for you. Looking at cells in a blade of grass is fantastic too, btw. I can appreciate both. I'm multi-faceted!

Thank you for this. I didn't know Mr. Shatner went into space. Very profound comments from him.
