  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Former President Donald Trump has said that he would temporarily accept the speakership of the House of Representatives, according to a report by Fox News.

“They have asked me if I would take it for a short period of time for the party, until they come to a conclusion – I’m not doing it because I want to – I will do it if necessary, should they not be able to make their decision,” Trump said. “I would only do it for the party.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene
@RepMTG

If Trump becomes Speaker of the House, the House chamber will be like a Trump rally everyday!! It would be the House of MAGA!!!

Article I, Section 6, Clause 1:

The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Would this mean that those gag orders, those pernicious violations of Trumps unalienable 1st Amendment rights, would go ((POOF!)) on the House floor?

Wouldn't that be something, just imagine all the liberals heads exploding at once ........ they are so scared, Trump is brought up in more and more threads here at CF every day.
The Democrat Reps would have to listen to Trump campaign speeches every day, or vacate the Capitol. The latter would be preferable. As an added bonus, Trump would get all of that free air time on the House floor.

That's one way to destroy the USA.

No, the Democratic representatives would not have to listen to insane rants every day. But there would be no chance of any legislation, for better or for worse.

talk about 'limited government' ..
it'd be completely stymied
Doubt that, but even that would be better than in the destructive course this administration has us on right now.

They might still have to listen to some of their insane rants, even if they didn't show up for work; if they were playing hooky together.
But there would be no chance of any legislation, for better or for worse.
How do you figure that?

Voting and Quorum Procedures in the House
of Representatives
The Constitution requires that a quorum, defined as a majority of the House, be present on the
floor when the House transacts business. The House, however, always presumes that a quorum is
present unless and until its absence is demonstrated conclusively. The rules of the House strictly
limit the occasions on which a Representative may make a point of order that a quorum is not
present. In current practice, Members usually make such a point of order only when a vote is
taking place. If a majority of the Members fails to respond to a quorum call or participate in an
electronically recorded vote conducted in the House, the House must adjourn or take steps
necessary to secure the attendance of enough Members to constitute a quorum.

So long as all of the Republicans showed up; there would surely be a quorum.

House Rules prevent someone indicted for a felony from serving, but hey... who knows what happens when Republicans have a majority (in the remote case they use it successfully to vote for Trump). They're just rules. It's like Monopoly when your little brother is the banker.

It would be comedy gold watching Trump try to navigate Robert's Rules of Order or whatever. Who am I kidding? He'll just pound his gavel and say "No, YOU'RE out of order! Sergeant-of-Army! Smite him with your mace!"

(B) Resolutions proposing a change in Republican Conference rules.—
The Speaker is voted on by the whole House, not just an internal matter of the Republican Conference. The House Rules apply. To change the House rules would require bringing that to a vote, which would require a Speaker. The current temporary Speaker really only has the power to call a vote for a Speaker.

It's not a House rule though, it's a conference rule.
