  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Gaetz says he will force vote to oust McCarthy as House speaker

Gaetz said Sunday that he plans to introduce a motion to remove McCarthy from his leadership position, marking a dramatic escalation of the long-simmering tensions between the men. Once Gaetz does so, the House would have 48 hours to vote on the matter. The Florida Republican did not say when he would introduce the motion.

“I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy,” Gaetz said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Hard-right obstructionists in the House GOP have made clear for weeks that McCarthy would be removed if he relied on Democrats to pass any funding legislation.

On Sunday morning, Rep. Michael Lawler (R-N.Y.), one of the most vulnerable moderate Republicans in the conference, told “This Week” that Gaetz’s decision is a “diatribe of delusional thinking.” Lawler noted that while Gaetz is complaining about how slowly the House has moved to advance appropriations bills, the Florida Republican himself is one of the reasons the process has been so slow.

“By putting this motion to vacate on the floor, you know what Matt Gaetz is going to do? He’s going to delay the ability to complete that work over the next 45 days,” Lawler said. [just as he had in the weeks leading up to Saturday's last-minute vote.]

With so few supporters in what is now termed "the chaos caucus" Gaetz won't go far. McCarthy will hopefully offer conservative Democrats a few small concessions to get their votes.
The Democrats need to be able to force a vote on any bill with 200 supporters/signatories.

The issue is to have rules changes, including the abolition of the rule to vaccate the chair.

In the short term, we need a vote on Ukraine funding, and a commitment to vote on any Senate omnibus budget bill approved by 60% of the Senate.

As expected....

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) introduced a resolution Monday evening to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his seat, triggering an expected intraparty clash and setting up a showdown for the House to decide whether to depose McCarthy likely within 48 hours.

...should be an interesting 48 hours...especially hours 46-48.

I'm not so sure a Republican civil war in the House is the kind of distraction they are looking for. A member pulling a fire alarm however, well that is a matter of upmost importance!

I'm flabbergasted that Gaetz has any influence whatsoever given his checkered past. Character used to matter in the GOP.

Indeed. I was thinking the same thing.

Interesting that in an interview from Gaetz to reporters today, he was asked if he had spoken to trump about this, and he said that he had. This is funny stuff....

....from the Daily Beast noting CNN and FOX reporting (unnamed sources)

A cohort of House Republicans are reportedly penning a motion to expel Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) as he ramps up his efforts to boot House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from GOP leadership.

Citing anonymous sources within Congress, Fox News and CNN both reported Sunday that lawmakers will turn against Gaetz if an ongoing Ethics Committee probe doesn’t clear him of long simmering allegations of wrongdoing.

That motion is already mostly written, one source told Fox, but it remains unclear what the panel may find Gaetz guilty of. If a vote to expel was held in the House, a two-thirds vote would be required.

“No one can stand him at this point,” the source told Fox News. “A smart guy without morals.”

Motion to Vacate passes.
There's a great deal of Schadenfreude seeing the GOP infighting to such an immense degree.

???

Why wouldn't Gaetz and his band of 20 have influence in a Trump dominated Republican Party?

That wasn't the actual motion to vacate. That was a procedural step to see if they would continue debate on it.

Right - My mistake - The actual motion to vacate will come up after the current debating.
