  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

UPDATED: IRS consultant charged in massive leak of taxpayer data

A consultant for the IRS has been charged with leaking the private tax information of thousands of the nation’s wealthiest people to a prominent news outlet, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

The agency said Charles Littlejohn, 38, of Washington, D.C., stole the files while working as a government contractor and gave them to the news organization. The agency doesn’t name the outfit, though it appears to be referring to ProPublica.

It also says he leaked tax information about “Public Official A” to an unnamed second news organization, an apparent reference to former President Donald Trump and the New York Times.

It's a little concerning that people in a consultant/contractor role have that kind of access at such a major government agency.

The company I work for does a lot of consulting with a lot of big "players" (albeit none of them federal agencies...a few state-level ones, but federal is a whole 'nother level)...and I've been sent "on assignment" to places and when it comes to sensitive financial information, they're extremely cautious about that stuff.

For instance, I (and 3 team members) spent a week "on assignment" consulting with one of the "Big 3" credit bureaus. The amount of safeguards in place were astonishing.

Literally had someone from the organization staring over my shoulder the entire time I was working (along with the two strategically placed cameras recording). Special screen recording software was in effect so they could record everything I was doing in my various VM sessions. It was a "your cell phone or any other devices capable of pictures or video recording stays in a lockbox outside of the actual room where you'll be working and accessing information" type of deal, and I had to sign a dozen or so NDAs all specifically pertaining to consumer data.

Felt like what I'd imagine it being like for someone traveling to North Korea. (minus the execution part)

The fact that the IRS isn't the doing the same with people in a consulting/contracting role (and being that they have access to all of our financials and SSNs) is, like I said, concerning.

Former IRS contractor accused of stealing Trump’s tax returns pleads guilty

Prosecutors say Charles Littlejohn of Washington, DC, sent Trump’s tax returns and other data to two media outlets that “published numerous articles describing the tax information they obtained from the Defendant.”

Littlejohn pleaded guilty to the one count of disclosing tax information, which he was charged with in late September.

Habba said Trump was opposed to the plea deal and called for the maximum sentence of five years in prison for Littlejohn.

[Sentencing set for January.]

Hopefully he'll get something. I've worked contract security and have had access to sensitive information (like the financial records of the contracting company's CEO) and would have expected to face some legal consequence if I stole it and gave it to a media outlet.
