  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If the border is secure where are they coming from.
I'm sure a lot come on plane. But nobody seems to be complaining about them. Where are the patrols? Most Democrats I know aren't against tighter borders. It's just a bunch of people, that don't understand that we can't afford to help everyone, that comes from different countries. They get all the media attention. I'm in CA, and I don't think anyone from other states or countries should get welfare or anything free in CA. Since they're not paying taxes in CA. That's should be the churches responsibility, since they should want to. Because they're supposed to be saved.

I wrote it. You quoted it but ignored it. For some reason you cherry-pick my quotes concentrating on one part and ignoring the other. What is your motive?
My motive is to discuss what i believe is germane to the thread and do my best to avoid caustic people.

Really what should be done is telling Mexico if they don't quit allowing migrants to use Mexico as a gateway to America we will not honor the USMCA and end our trade with them.
Because our economy would shrug off loosing a top three trade partner and out international relations would do nothing but improve by ripping up, more, agreements.

But it would show anyone who dares to defy whatever 'we' (a.k.a. the most extreme of the American right wing) want these week how 'tough' we are, and that's what really matters. Kind of like how our foreign policy with regard to the Middle East is at its most productive as concerns making the world safer when it follows the calls of our best and brightest to "just go in there and bomb the heck out of them until there's nothing left/turn the Middle East into a parking lot." Remember how tough that made us look when we did basically that in Iraq and Afghanistan? Everyone was safe forever. There's no reason we can't push around Mexico forever, too. We're the best country in the world and always will be, so long as you don't look at all the metrics by which we clearly aren't. Most of those are probably published in librul dummycrat magazines anyway, and nobody reads those anyway unless they have blue hair and more genders than members of their polyamorous thrupple sham-marriages, so those kinds of facts don't matter.

caustic: 2. sarcastic in a scathing and bitter way.

Criticism of others invites criticism from others....I always found that not posting caustic topics meant to ridicule and insult others is the best way to avoid recoil. Communication is a two-way street, and if one is not mentally up to the task to take criticism after doling it out, perhaps one should refrain from being critical of others, and simply calling other people caustic will not do anything to build bridges to understanding.

Here is what was said in context:

“We have to let the word out that when you come to New York we’re not going to have more hotel rooms. We don’t have capacity, so we have to also message properly that we’re at our limit, if you leave your country go somewhere else but the smartest thing is to apply for asylum before you leave your country."

NY is still a sanctuary state for immigrants in dire straits looking to survive, like every other human on the planet. All they are saying is we are at capacity and you should either call ahead for a reservation or go to another state. At this point I am tired of listening to people who have little or no compassion in their hearts for others in need.

How do we “close our borders” and yet still comply with the USMCA?
We start by telling Mexico if they don't stop allowing their country to be used to a gateway to America we will not to trade with them.

The USMCA ... Each country can still introduce new border restrictions for national security reasons

If the mass migration (via Mexico) isn't a national security reason ... I don't know what is.

Trade and migration are not intrinsically intertwined.

Agreed.

Yet, some folks keep calling for a "Closed Border".

Given the fact that many illegal goods and persons actually transit through ports of entry, the logical conclusion to such sentiments is close the ports of entry (...which would effectively end cross border commerce).

Frankly, Closed Border and Open Border are meaningless talking points.

The US is one of the richest nations in the world and we certainly outspend everyone militarily. I don't know where Mexico ranks in comparison, but if we, magnificent as we be, cannot manage to keep outsiders out, is it right and fair that we expect Mexico to do it with fewer resources?

It could be a combined effort ... that would be the point of ending trade with them ... to bring them to the table towards a combined effort.
